What will I learn on this module?

This module is divided into two parts, the integrated group design section and the individual research project.

In the first part you will work with your peers to demonstrate the assimilation of what you have learned from your programme to produce an analytical piece of work in which the Construction and Civil Engineering design process is investigated. You will be allocated a tutor to your group to who will support you throughout the whole process. As part of the project you will consider the following areas :

Project Design briefs and requirement capture
Corporate and social responsibility
Team building
KPI’s and DQI’s
The reflective practitioner, examples from industry.
Establishing the business case

For the individual section, againyou will then work with an individual tutor to take a self-driven approach to investigating an identified problem within the Construction Engineering industry. You will be expected to produce a substantive piece of work in which you clarify the work through deriving Aims and Objectives, provide a theoretical background to the problem and determine and select a method for investigation. This will provide a framework for you to pursue the collection and analysis of data to realise the project aims.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through initial knowledge transfer directed from lectures by tutors and guests from industry but very quickly you will be expected to work within your group to complete a forensic examination of the project brief, while evaluating its wider implications. This will simulate the peer support afforded in professional practice as students learn to assimilate the complexities of an open brief. You will advance to addressing the design requirements of the brief as individuals. Group tutors will be assigned to support both the group and then the individual student members of a given group, depending on the assessment stages.

An initial short lecture series will support initial knowledge transfer so that you are prepared for the research project work. These lectures will also outline aspects such as health and safety, ethical issues, information sources and their appraisal. You will produce a project proposal and will develop and execute a project plan to implement that proposal (with key stages and milestones) designed to meet the project learning outcomes with guidance from an academic supervisor. Project proposals may be based on industrial experience (either of a member of staff or of the student) or linked to topics covered elsewhere on the programme that you wish to further develop your knowledge in. The project involves you engaging in a substantial amount of individual independent work, under the guidance of the academic supervisor who will act as a “Critical Friend” through discussion of your work to allow you to reflect and improve.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

For the group project, a tutor will be appointed to offer group and individual support through tutorial sessions which will facilitate your engagement and exploration of the project during the initial weeks. It is envisaged that the nature of this support will change through your progression through the group work stage as confidence grows and you are more able to define your own priorities through your engagement with the project particulars.

For the individual research project, formative assessment will be through regular interaction with the project supervisor. The supervisor will discuss the progress of the work regularly with you, make suggestions and where necessary advise on any significant changes of direction for the work. The feedback involved in these discussions will be aimed at allowing you to reflect and feed forward improvements to the work. Written and verbal feedback will be provided as appropriate on the final work submitted for the project to allow you to reflect for the future.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:

5. Investigate and define a problem and identify constraints including environmental, sustainability risk and ethical assessment issues, drawing on other disciplines as appropriate.

How will I be assessed?

The integrated group design work will be assessed by a group presentation weighted at 30%. Students will be required to work in groups to make a presentation on the project brief, identifying its requirements, constraints and business opportunities. [MLO’s 1&4]

The individual research project will be assessed by the submission of a 10,000 word thesis which will be weighted at 70%. [MLO’s 1,2,3,5]

Continuous feedback will be given for both assessments through regular interaction with the project supervisor to discuss your progress. Verbal and written feedback will be provided following the group presentations. Formative feedback will be provided to students upon submission of an initial proposal for the thesis. Written feedback will be given for your submitted thesis and will be provided via the module electronic portal site.





Module abstract

As a Construction Engineer you will need a range of skills to function as a professional and to increase your employability and this module will allow you to both develop and demonstrate these skills. You will work in teams and as an individual delivering analysis of technical, theoretical and practical issues and using these to research further and to derive and propose solutions to problems and communicate them clearly. You will experience reflection on what is going on and support from tutors acting as critical friends to discuss what you are doing and help you to consider your ideas, think deeply about them and improve. You will be intellectually challenged and bring together much of what you have learned from the programme. The assessments will support this through the opportunities they give to think about, not just the problems encountered but innovative ways to solve them.
