What will I learn on this module?

You will learn through understanding the key requirements and practices related to the management of people within the context of the construction industry. The topics that will be studied include;

Team Building – How to create a successful team.
Negotiation and Conflict – How to make it work for you.
Managing the supply chain – Essential for working in the construction industry.
Stakeholder Management – Client, users, neighbours etc.
Leadership – What kind of leader are you and how can you develop this.
Change Management – Keeping up to date with an ever changing domestic and global changing marketplace.
Behaviour – An area linked to many of the other topics.
Motivation – How money is not the big motivator everyone thinks it is.
Collaborative Working – a key are of improvement required in the construction industry
Culture – What is culture within the construction industry and how can it be improved.

How will I learn on this module?

Lectures will be used to introduce the, practices and principles concerning the management of people within the construction industry.
The seminars will typically involve the use of electronic materials (such as web links and videos), student presentations, and in-class discussions to further engage students and enrich and enhance learning. Through these mediums students will be encouraged to practice research based problem solving to analysis current problems within the construction industry and propose potential solutions. These issues will include construction culture or how greater collaborative working practice within the construction industry could improve profit margins and client satisfaction.
A range of guest lecture sessions will provide the students the opportunity to meet professionals within the field. The guest lecturers will provide the students the opportunity to create links with potential employers and boost future employment prospects.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Extensive use will be made of blackboard to support and facilitate directed learning. This will be in the form of the teaching material and supporting documents such as research papers, current media coverage, interesting web links and relevant videos for example. By using workshops as the delivery mechanism the students will be provided with regular formative feedback and a more informal platform to ask questions necessary to support successful learning.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Evaluate key issues in the management of people in the delivery of quality construction projects.

2. Review and critically evaluate approaches to managing and developing people to meet changing technical and managerial needs in the delivery of quality construction projects.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
3. Examine and evaluate the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the delivery of construction projects.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
4. Demonstrate an appreciation of the cultural and ethical issues in relation to the management of people in the delivery of quality construction projects.

How will I be assessed?

The first summative assessment will require the researching and preparation of a 10 minute group presentation (weighted at 50%). The presentation will require the learners to investigate the roles and responsibilities of the key people involved with the delivery of a construction project. The learners will appraise these roles and responsibilities and evaluate potentially problematic management issues that may arise during the duration of a project. The assessment will focus on LO’s 1 and 3.

The second summative assessment will build on the findings of the first assessment. The learners will be required to research and critical evaluate solutions for the problematic management issues raised during assessment 1. The approaches to manage and develop people during the delivery of a construction project will need to appreciate cultural and ethical issues in relation to a quality project that satisfies the client. The findings will be submitted as a 2500 word individual electronic portfolio (weighted at 50%). The portfolio provides learners with the opportunity to be creative in relation to a visually engaging format of their work. A mix of illustrations, models and figures will be encouraged as well as text. The assessment will test LO’s 2 and 4.

Electronic and oral feedback will be provided by the tutor upon the return of the assessed work.

Students will also be provided the opportunity to discuss their written and oral feedback and receive further feedback on a one to one basis during workshop sessions.





Module abstract

Managing a successful construction project requires the management of time, cost, quality and safety. To be able to do this effectively a construction professional must be able to manage their most important resource – people. This module will provide knowledge and understanding to allow you to do this. The key issues that the module covers are team building, negotiation and conflict, managing the supply chain, stakeholder management, leadership, change management, behaviour, motivation, collaborative working and culture. The assessment for the module includes an opportunity to engage with technology enhanced learning. The module provides the opportunity to visit live construction projects and meet industry professionals who can provide cutting edge knowledge, current best practice and lessons learnt from their own experience. The module is situated at level 6 to allow students to reflect upon their knowledge and understanding following the sandwich placement year, and ultimately prepare for graduate employment.
