What will I learn on this module?

On this module you will learn about the fundamental principles of the construction of new buildings and the repair and upgrading of existing buildings all set within the context of a typical house and from the perspective of a construction project manager.
As you explore the construction of new buildings you will discover how each stage contributes to providing a comfortable and safe building, considerate of the environment and cost effective. From your consideration of the construction process you will learn about the materials and techniques used to construct each stage of the building including :
• The legislation, regulations and codes of best practice in building.
• An investigation and analysis of the building site conditions.
• Excavation work to prepare the site for building.
• Suitable foundation types to support the building.
• Ground and upper floor construction.
• External and internal walls.
• Doors, windows, stairs and ramps.
• Roof construction.

Using the knowledge you acquire from the construction of new buildings you will learn why and how buildings develop defects and the techniques used to repair these defects and upgrade the building including :
• The legal implications of, and obligations to, the repair of buildings.
• The conditions that cause a building to move and so develop defects.
• Internal defects to ground and upper floors, walls and roofs.
• The effects of condensation, dampness and pest infestation.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a range of teaching methods including lectures, workshops and practical sessions. Lectures will offer you the opportunity to develop your knowledge of the principles of the construction of new buildings and upgrading of existing buildings and will enable you to use this knowledge to further explore these areas in more detail. During workshops and your own independent information gathering exercises, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge by applying it to complex problems. Seminars and workshops will make use of a wide variety of the university’s facilities including classrooms, computer rooms and well equipped labs. You will receive continuous feedback on your work from these sessions which will enable you to develop your ability to think independently and offer and justify your own opinions. In addition you will have the opportunity to attend field study visits to local construction sites to link your academic learning to the practical construction environment. Assessments will give you the chance to demonstrate your learning by evaluating and identifying appropriate solutions and applying them to common construction problems. Assessments will be a mix of individual and group work enabling you to develop the skills to work collaboratively and constructively in multi-cultural environments and teams. Your learning will be further enhanced by the use of technology. You will have electronic access, via the university’s e-learning portal and on-line library resources, to all learning materials, relevant text books and research materials and assessment tasks. In addition, further use will be made of technology in the submission of your assessment and by your tutors in the provision of relevant module information, learning resources and the feedback on your assessment tasks.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Academic support for this module will be provided by tutors in a variety of ways to suit your individual needs. Continuous feedback will be provided on your work during seminars and workshops and constructive feedback will be given on submission of your module assessments. Outside the classroom, you are able to meet with tutors if you would like additional guidance on your studies. The university’s electronic learning portal will also allow you to seek additional guidance and engage in academic discussion with your tutor and classmates using the discussion board available.

Knowledge & Understanding:

1. Review and assess the knowledge and understanding of the elements used to construct load-bearing buildings.
2. You will be able to identify building defects and establish their causes.

3. You will develop your ability to appraise, specify and illustrate the technologies used to construct load-bearing buildings.
4. You will be able to analyse the conditions of existing buildings, from which identify the defects present and specify suitable repair methods.

5. Discuss the importance of addressing the practical issues of constructing and repairing buildings to provide society with a safe, healthy and sustainable living environment and, within this context, the importance of evaluating your own learning.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment pattern for this module will be as follows :

Formative Assessment (Continuous, Year Long) :
You will have the opportunity during class based sessions to carry out individual and group based tasks based around the module themes. Continuous feedback on these tasks will be given by tutors during the sessions through one to one discussions and tutor and student led Q&A activities.

Semester 1
Summative Assessment (50% of module mark):
Using the knowledge acquired from class based sessions and your own independent and tutor guided research, you will be given a scenario from which you will be required to identify and justify a range of possible construction technology solutions. Your solutions will be drawn from the knowledge acquired during class based sessions as well as from your own research into current construction technology practice. The final submission will be in the form of a report to the client detailing your fully justified proposals. You will submit your report electronically via the e-learning portal. You will receive individual feedback on your report electronically with further feedback given in class based sessions on generic issues arising from the reports. (MLO 1, 3 & 5)

Semester 2
Summative Assessment No. 1 (30% of module mark)
Using the knowledge acquired from class based sessions and your own independent and tutor guided research, you will form into small groups to act as a construction consultancy team for a local client. Your team will identify a property in the local area which is showing signs of defects and is in need of repair. Your team will investigate the chosen building and prepare a presentation for your client (tutor and your class mates) on the defects identified and fully justified proposals for the remediation works required to return it to a habitable building. You will submit an electronic copy of your presentation through the e-learning portal as well as a hard copy during the presentation. Immediate feedback will be given by the tutor and your class mates in the form of a Q&A session on completion of your presentation. Further constructive tutor feedback will be provided to each group and will address both the content and standard of the presentation. (MLO 2,4 & 5)

Summative Assessment No. 2 (20% of module mark)
The final assessment for this module will take the form of an individual personal reflection of your learning over the course of the module. You will be asked to consider your learning in relation to what you have learnt, how you have learnt, your experiences of working individually and as a group and how you can apply your experiences from this module into subsequent construction technology modules and the wider programme modules. Your reflective report will be submitted electronically through the e-Learning Portal with tutor feedback being issued electronically. (MLO 5)

Module abstract

The construction industry is a complex yet vibrant and exciting industry in which to work and its influence is felt in almost every other sector of the global economy. Central to the delivery of successful buildings which satisfy the needs of society, is the selection of the right materials and techniques used to construct buildings. This module will introduce you to these materials and techniques and offer you the opportunity to learn about how buildings ‘fit together’. Classroom and workshop based sessions will be complimented by visits to live construction sites where you will have the opportunity to speak to industry professionals, learn about their skills and experiences and see first-hand how the building process unfolds to produce the finished building. This module will give you the foundations on which to develop your understanding of the construction process and prepare you for studying more complex buildings in subsequent years, leading to a comprehensive knowledge of the technical aspects of the construction process and ultimately graduate employment.
