What will I learn on this module?

You will learn new ways of managing projects within the construction engineering sector so that you can formulate strategies for innovative, effective and efficient project delivery. The topics that will be studied include;

• Lean Construction - Understanding innovation, waste, safety and sustainability
• Total Quality Management - (TQM) and continuous improvement
• Design, construct links - visualising the design process, (ADePT)
• Value – Client and end user satisfaction
• Target Value Design (TVD)
• Planning theory and practice
• Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)
• Relational Contracting and Collaboration
• Building Information Modelling (BIM)

How will I learn on this module?

Lectures and seminars will be used to support effective transmission of information and will be delivered via a combination of face-to-face ‘live’ sessions lectures held in university classrooms, and the use of digitally pre-recorded sessions or live video webcasts. All ‘live’ lecture sessions will be captured using Northumbria University approved teaching platforms (currently the Panopto video platform: https://www.panopto.com/) and hosted on the eLearning Portal (ELP) with materials being made available after delivery on campus. This content will remain available throughout the programme.

Seminars will also be utilised to allow you to develop necessary knowledge, understanding and skills. A seminar approach will allow smaller, more interactive research based approach to problem solving, through the analysis of current problems within the construction engineering industry and proposal of potential solutions.
These sessions will typically involve you using electronic materials (such as web links and videos), games, presentations and in-class discussions to further engage you and enrich and enhance your learning. Case studies and master classes from professional practitioners will also supplement the sessions. In addition, some of the seminars will be structured as reading groups to allow deeper class discussion of key text.
To further expand on the seminar learning a computer based training package will be utilised. This allows you to progress through a structured learning programme at your own pace. The content of the package directly supports the module content.
The tutor will direct you to relevant academic and industry sources and encourage you to read these as well as exploring your own independent reading around each of the topics covered.

In addition to on-site delivery, this module is offered wholly by distance learning using the University’s virtual learning environment. In this mode you will learn through direct teaching methods such as directed study of textbooks, text- and video-based learning resources and scholarly journal articles. Additional support mechanisms will be utilised to provide you with specific and focused guidance and support. These will include: regular and frequent online guidance sessions; access to one-to-one academic guidance sessions by telephone or email and interactive collaborate online peer support forums. For distance learning students equivalent lecture and seminar materials will be provided to facilitate learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Extensive use will be made of the eLearning platform [blackboard] to direct you to learning opportunities. This will be in the form of the teaching material and supporting documents such as research papers, current media coverage, interesting web links and relevant videos for example. By using seminars as the delivery mechanism you will be provided with regular feedback for improvement and a more informal platform to ask the questions necessary to support your successful learning.
The Case studies and guest lectures will enhance your learning by providing a professional context linked to our industry.

MLO3 – You will formulate strategies for improvement within the global construction engineering industry to demonstrate cultural, ethical and sustainable awareness.

How will I be assessed?

The staged assessment will be as follows;

1. Group peer teaching of innovative improvement methods within the construction industry (Individual for DL students). MLO1, 2 and 3.
2. Individual portfolio to demonstrate how the theory/industry best practice can solve industry problems. MLO1, 2 and 3.

All assessments will be marked and feedback provided electronically.

Informal feedback will also be achieved through staged assessment, as well as seminar/workshop activity, informal peer review, online asynchronous discussion forums, and other non-assessed activity. Feedback will enable you to undertake self-reflection and to feed forward newly-acquired understanding in order to promote and enhance your learning; thus providing you with an opportunity to improve your assessed coursework.

Module abstract

The construction industry is a complex, dynamic and exciting global industry. It shapes all of our lives by providing the built environment in which we live. However, construction projects can only be considered successful if they are delivered on time, on budget, to the necessary quality, safely and without unnecessary harm to the environment. Research identifies that the majority of projects fail to deliver many of these success factors. The aim of this module is to investigate why the construction industry finds it so difficult to complete projects successfully and to investigate and consider innovative ideas that might be able to solve this problem. The module provides the opportunity to consider interesting case studies and meet industry professionals who can provide cutting edge knowledge, current best practice and lessons learnt from their own experience.
