What will I learn on this module?

Group dynamics are the influential actions, processes and changes that occur within and between groups of people. Groups come in all shapes and sizes and their functions are many and varied. To understand groups and their dynamics, you must understand how people interact and function whilst working together in formalized organizational contexts. The module aims to unite and contextualize selected key theories associated with team dynamics from psychology and the social sciences with selected key theories associated with groups, teams and management processes from management and organization sciences. The overarching aim is to equip and empower you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to create, participate in and lead real and virtual project-orientated teams.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will adopt an integrated approach to learning and teaching. This will include a programme of formal scheduled teaching and a constructively aligned programme of tutor-guided independent learning. You will examine selected concepts and theories related to how groups operate in organizations during lectures and seminar peer group activities. You will also study specific chapters of the essential reading textbooks, complete applied tasks, critique case studies and watch online video presentations during the tutor-guided independent learning programme. The Blackboard course will be used to disseminate resources associated with the tutor-guided independent learning programme, including access to the Talis Aspire online dynamic reading list.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module will be delivered through tutor-guided lecture and seminar programmes. The lectures will involve elements of active participation by students that will be initialized and facilitated by a tutor. As a result, you will be expected to participate in small-group discussions and to verbally feedback the outcomes during the course of the lecture. The seminars will also require you to participate in small-group discussions in order to address focused tasks assigned by the tutor. These tasks will often involve the critical analysis of case studies and the exploration of educational scenarios. Once again, you will be required to participate in small-group verbal presentations to the entire cohort, under the direction and support of a tutor. The Blackboard course will provide support to you outside of your formal scheduled teaching. This will include the tutor-guided independent learning programme, which will require you to read pre-selected chapters from the essential reading textbook, refereed journal articles and case study materials; and to watch online video recordings of the lecture presentations. Additional support mechanisms will be employed to provide bespoke guidance for distance learning students. These will include the use of Blackboard's asynchronous discussion board forums and access to one-to-one support with the tutor(s) by telephone and/or Skype.

4. Critically review the literature on team dynamics, management and organizational behaviour and engage with what others have written through evaluative discourse.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
Formative assessment of your knowledge and understanding is a key component of the assessment strategy. It forms an integral part of the formal scheduled teaching programme if you are a full- or part-time student and will be an integral part of the asynchronous discussion board forums on the Blackboard course if you are distance learning student. Formative assessment feedback will enable you to undertake self-reflection and to feed-forward newly-acquired knowledge and understanding in order to refine your tutor-guided and self-directed independent learning and enhance your performance during the submission of the academic paper.

Summative Assessment
You will be summatively assessed by one item of coursework, which will be the academic paper.

Academic Paper: Completion and submission of the academic paper will form the single component of summative assessment for the module. The tasks associated with completion of the academic paper will be designed to unite your tutor-guided and self-directed independent learning in order to demonstrate achievement of the module learning outcomes.

Before commencing the academic paper, you will be required to complete a Belbin Self-Perception Inventory (SPI) in order to gain an understanding of your preferred role(s) whilst working as a member of a project-orientated team. You will evaluate the results of your Belbin SPI in relation to your participation in a recently completed team-based project-orientated task. You will choose your own task. The context of the task is required to be either educational, recreational, sporting or public/private/third sector related. During this evaluation, you will be required to critically analyse your own teamwork experience in relation to self-selected group dynamic, management and organizational behaviour theories and concepts that are pertinent to your chosen project-related task.

You will be required to participate in a peer review process designed to enhance the quality of your academic paper prior to summative assessment. The process will be administered using the Peer Review tool in TurnitinUK via the Blackboard course. Following submission of your draft academic paper, you will be required to undertake the academic scholarly review of two of your peers' work. This will require you to write formative feedback commentaries using a standardized template the structure of which will be constructively aligned to the module learning outcomes.

You will be able to access your formative assessment feedback and TurnitinUK originality report once the peer review process is finished. To encourage your full participation, a mark equivalent to 10% of the module mark will be awarded to you upon completion of all aspects of the peer review process. Access to the peer review process will be initiated after you have submitted your draft academic paper. If you fail to submit your draft academic paper, you will be excluded from the subsequent stages of the peer view process and will therefore not receive the peer review participation mark.

You will be able to access and review your TurnitinUK originality report following the summative assessment of your academic paper. Your unconfirmed mark and summative assessment feedback will be released to you using the GradeMark facility in TurnitinUK. The QuickMark and Rubric Score Card tools will be used to provide consistent summative assessment feedback for all students enrolled on the module. [MLOs: 1 to 5]





Module abstract

Of all the variables that contribute to the success or failure of projects, the one that is most neglected, and therefore in need of the most attention, is the project team itself. The module aims to provide a clear and concise overview of the key concepts and theories of project, social and organization psychology pertaining to effective project team dynamics. Of equal importance, the module will also explore the key concepts and theories associated with management and organizational behaviour which influence people and project-orientated team working. Grounded in the social, management and organization sciences, but with an underlying practice-based focus on effective team working, the module will enable you to understand and participate in and effectively lead real and virtual project-orientated teams.
