What will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will consider the skills and attributes that are key to effective management, enterprise and leadership within cultural and creative practice. You will examine the tensions that exist between cultural considerations and the more commercial, business aspects, where at times the focus may be on profit, at other times on creative development - and often a mix of the two. The cultural manager and leader thus needs to be familiar with both sets of demands. The emphasis throughout the module is on professionalism and ensuring that the creative process is effective and efficient and that goals can be met without compromising product, process or vision.

You will identify and reflect on the unique skills, capabilities and understandings required to deal with such complexities. From public-sector supported organisations and institutions at one end of the scale to micro businesses and individual creative practitioners and freelancers at the other end, the environment in which these disparate activities take place is shaped by the political, social and economic environment, and it is this framework that you will interrogate. The relationships between management, enterprise and leadership are considered, and you will be encouraged and supported to consider your own skills development needs in this regard. CVs and professional development will be considered with an eye to career progression and in readiness for the placement module that is part of the programme.

How will I learn on this module?

A cultural manager, entrepreneur or leader needs to be able to fully understand the needs, aspirations and motivations of creative practitioners. According to Byrnes, that involves helping an organization realize its vision and fulfill the mission (Brynes, 2009), but the starting point for effective management and leadership of others must be self-management. In this module, you will therefore be supported to critically identify and evaluate your own skills and abilities, as well as your own developmental needs.

You will learn through a module framework of active engagement with current social, political and practice issues around creativity, innovation and entrepreneurialism, internationalism and diversity in the cultural sector, which includes engagement with practitioners. This framework of learning will be supported by a process of self development which will assit you in acquiring or enhancing the confidence and self awareness required for effective management. The fundamentals of management, enterprise and leadership are examined to determine those appropriate for use or adaptation within the sphere of cultural activity; however, no prior knowledge of management or leadership is assumed for this module.

You will also consider the skills needed within social developmental processeses, and team working and motivation are explored and case studies and scenarios used to help locate and apply management and leadership frameworks to practice. Management is seen as a process involving insight, intuition, creativity and risk-taking, as well as being a deliberately managed process, and this balance is sought through a mix of self- and skills-anaylsis.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Your module tutor will play an active role in guiding you through module sessions, e-learning activities and one-to-one electronic and academic support as appropriate. Seminars, tutorials and guided and virtual visits will offer additional opportunities to identify and discuss issues and ask questions. Course materials will be made available on the relevant e-Learning Portal sites.

You can book tutorial sessions or telephone guidance sessions with the module tutor should you require any further clarification rgarding the module.

At Department and Faculty level, the Student Administration and Support Centre (SASC) provides a place to ask questions (eg. regarding timetables, late submissions and personal extenuating cirrcumstances). SASC will refer you to the correct university service if it cannot directly help you.

Ability to identify and communicate appropriate management theory, tools and skills for the cultural sector
4. Critical analysis of own management skills and developmental needs within the context of the cultural sector

5. Sensitivity and awareness of cultural diversity and culturally diverse needs in a global context

How will I be assessed?

FORMATIVE
Formative assessment will be carried out throughout the seminar sessions where you will discuss literature, issues and themes; undertake problem-orientated tasks; and complete regular e-tivities relating to a wider range of issues pertinent to management in the cultural and creative industries. Peer and tutor feedback, and self-reflection, will encourage sensitivity, ethics and curiosity. Tasks will encorage the ability to communicate effectively and to present yourself in a professional manner. Formative assessment will also be carried out through the briefing and development sessions in relation to the summative assessment.

SUMMATIVE
The summative assessment will be a 5000 word essay demonstrating your knowledge of management within the cultural and creative industries, and theories and issues relevant to the sector.
