Do you have a passion and flair for writing? Do you want to improve your writing? Do you want your writing to be published? If your answer to all of these questions is yes, then the postgraduate Creative Writing degree at Northumbria University is for you!

On this Creative Writing course, you will have the opportunity to learn from inspirational, talented and award-winning writers, and to develop your own ability and confidence as a writer. With a focus on honing your technique, you will learn how to develop a story and make it work. This MA Creative Writing course is practical and skills-based, involving workshops, self-directed work, tutorials and group feedback. You will be invited to events where you can listen to staff and student readings, or perhaps even showcase your own writing.

With strong links to industry such as New Writing North, this course gives you the chance to explore new ways of working, and to enhance your writing skills, analytical thinking and creative professionalism.

Whether you would like to specialise in scriptwriting, novel writing or playwriting, this course is designed not only to build on your passion for creative writing, but also to enhance your employability as you develop your portfolio across a broad range of genres, from fiction to radio drama and feature films.

Your course in brief

You will study five modules addressing all areas of Creative Writing. The course emphasises professional development, allowing you to select a career path that really suits you, as well as exposing you to numerous industry professionals in the form of lectures and guest speakers.

Each module involves producing a piece of work for your portfolio that recieves feedback in regular tutorial sessions with the idea of developing your confidence and ability to become a self-starter. This culminates in a dissertation project that encourages you to find your own creative voice and then use it to produce a cohesive body of work independently.
