What will I learn on this module?

You will explore the contemporary global social, cultural, economic and political relationships that generate conflict and exploitation, as well as providing opportunities to intervene and to ‘help’. The module focuses on analysing issues such as natural resource exploitation, climate change, famine, poverty and war, disaster relief, and tourism in order to understand the complex relationships that shape people’s experiences of a contemporary global and unequal society. The module will explore the networks of transnational relationships between ordinary people in different parts of the world (such as through tourism or resource exploitation), as well as broader relationships, such as those between nation-states (such as through war and intervention) or through global economic restructuring (such as through global consumption). Understanding these relationships will enable us to understand and explain contemporary patterns and experiences of conflict and exploitation, as well as pointing to the ways changing global relationships may also help prevent events such as genocide, disaster or famine.

How will I learn on this module?

You will be taught through one, weekly, three hour workshop. Sessions will include a mix of formal lectures, multi-media analysis, seminar-style activities, and some student-led presentation/discussion of key readings and questions. Students will be expected to read identified (on Blackboard student reading lists) key texts in advance of each workshop to enable participatory discussion.

You will be assessed through one, 4,000 word written essay in response to questions provided on the Blackboard site and discussed within the workshops. Extensive assessment advice will be provided in the Module Guide, on the e-learning portal and during lectures/workshops.

You will have access to the e-learning portal with a dedicated internet site to support this module. The site will include electronic copies of module and lecture materials, further reading materials, important module announcements, tutor advice/guidance and further internet links.

You will be expected to engage in private and self-directed study. The lecture programme, module guide, internet site and tutor prescription will provide a clear framework for this study.

Tutorial time will be available to all students (on a group or individual basis) during staff ‘office hours’ or upon appointment with a module tutor.

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Critically analyse contemporary global exploitation and conflict within specific contexts in the global south
2. Critically analyse the meaning of development within the global south
3. Apply theoretical perspectives from transnational/development studies in order to understand and analyse global exploitation and conflict, and to evaluate development practice within the global south

Demonstrate transferable skills such as: written communication skills; skills in critical analysis; skills in practically applying and evaluating theoretical perspectives; ability to understand and de-construct complex theories and concepts; ability to construct and present a coherent and thoroughgoing academic argument; effective time management.

How will I be assessed?

The module will be assessed through one, 4,000 word written essay in response to questions provided on the Blackboard site and discussed within the workshops.

The assignment is designed to test students’ knowledge and understanding of the main themes of the module – global exploitation, conflict and the meaning of ‘development’ within specific contexts – as well as their ability to engage in critical analysis of global exploitation, conflict and development utilising theoretical perspectives from the social sciences. The assignment will also test written communication skills and the ability to construct and present a coherent and thoroughgoing academic argument; As such, it will be assessed according to specific module assessment criteria which will be provided to students at the beginning of the module.

Students will receive feedback on their workshop activities (formative – which will be directly related to the preparation of the written essay) and extensive written feedback on their essays (summative)
