Your chosen pathway modules will positively build your skills and knowledge in your particular specialist area. Independent study will also help to tailor your learning experiences to your chosen area of practice.

You will also study the core module ‘Education system in England’, which will allow you to put all your specialist education modules into context. This will be particularly valuable for International students.

Before you begin this course, you’ll be given information on the range of modules available so that you can select which ones you wish to study, depending on the pathway in which you wish to qualify.

  • You’ll need to complete one of two core modules, as well as selecting a dissertation subject.
  • You’ll then select three specialist modules aligned to either Curriculum Development; Teaching and Learning; Leadership and Management or Special Educational Needs.

You will study current educational issues and examine key features of practices in educational systems, with particular reference to major current policy initiatives. We’ll encourage you to become an independent learner, critically reflecting on your own experience and applying what you have learnt to your own organisation.

Through lectures, seminars, and group discussion you will develop a critical understanding of the relationships between research, policy and practice and their applications to different settings. You will use work-based learning to tailor the course to suit your own specialist area of practice.

You’ll be assessed through a variety of approaches including assignments, presentations, portfolios and reports. All tasks will be clearly explained in advance and assessment criteria, grade descriptors and marking schemes will be available for every assignment and thoroughly discussed in class.

The staff who lead the modules on this course are all passionate about their subject. They are qualified teachers and practitioners, with substantial experience across the whole of the education sector.

Throughout the course you will be supported by your guidance tutor, the programme leader, and each of your module tutors. You will receive extra support and supervision during your dissertation project, when we will match you with a tutor who specialises in your area of interest. Research-rich learning is embedded into every aspect of our postgraduate Education courses. We have designed the courses to equip you with critical and independent enquiry skills that will last a lifetime.

Applicants should normally have:

A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree or equivalent.

All offers of places on this course are subject to a satisfactory DBS Disclosure.

How to Apply

How to Apply

Application for most courses is direct to the University via our online application form. Simply click on the 'Apply Online' button you will see on each of our course entries.

However, there are some courses where the application method is not directly to the University. These are:


Postgraduate Research
If you wish to apply for postgraduate research then please submit a research enquiry.

Application Deadlines 

Whilst most of our courses do not set an exact deadline for applications, you are advised to apply early to secure your place and organise any sponsorship or funding. Overseas students should submit applications to us by no later than 31 July for courses starting in early September or 1 December for courses that commence in January. This allows sufficient time to process our decision, for you to obtain visas and to organise your accommodation and travel arrangements.

Graduate Teacher Training Courses
Equal consideration is given to all applications received by UCAS Teacher Training by the main application deadline, details of all deadlines can be found on the UTT website.

Law professional courses
For details about the selection and allocation process for the full-time Law Professional courses please see the relevant website.  Master of Fine Art (MFA)

Master of Fine Art (MFA) We encourage all applications to the MFA programme for entry in September 2017 to apply prior to our guaranteed application review date of 1st June 2017. After this date, we will review applications subject to there being remaining spaces on the programme.


Decision Making Process

Most courses require at least one reference, but some may need two. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure Northumbria receives a satisfactory academic reference. If you have not been in education for a number of years, then a reference from your employer may be acceptable.

We try to reply to applicants as soon as possible but you should receive a response within 10 working days, and this will be one of the following.

  • Conditional offer which will normally be upon the completion of your undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification and achieving a particular classification or grade. You will be required to send us a confirmation that you have passed your current degree course as soon as you receive notification to enable us to confirm your offer. 
  • Unconditional offer is made if you have already met the entry requirements of your chosen course 
  • Reject your application 

You will be asked to confirm your acceptance in writing of any offer made.

Fairness and Transparency
The University is committed to a system of admissions that ensures fairness, transparency and equal opportunities within the legal framework of the UK and best practice. All reasonable effort will be made to ensure that no prospective or existing student is unreasonably treated less favourably on the grounds of age, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, creed, disability, sexual orientation, gender, marital or parental/carer status, political belief or social or economic class, or any other type of discrimination.

Tuition Fee Assessment
Tuition fees are set at different levels for Home/EU and International Students. Before you begin your course the University must establish your tuition fee status. In many cases, the University will be able to make this assessment without requiring any additional information.

Guidance can be found on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website to help you understand how Higher Education Institutions (HEI's) make an assessment on your fee status.

Selection Process 

Applicants who may not have the standard entry qualifications are welcome to apply and may be interviewed. Some courses will interview as part of the selection process. This applies particularly to courses in art and design, teaching and health.

Health Screening
Applicants for Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Primary (Early Years) and Social Work will be required to complete a health questionnaire. They may be required to attend for doctor or nurse assessment at the University Health Centre.

Prior to beginning their programme, all applicants to Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy are advised to start a course of Hepatitis B vaccinations, available from their own GP. In addition, Midwifery applicants must provide evidence before they commence training that they are immune to Hepatitis B or have Hepatitis B non-carried status.

Applicants to these courses who have had contact with MRSA in the previous 6 months may be asked to provide evidence that they are not colonised by submitting negative swabs results prior to commencement of training. Alternatively, they may be screened on commencement of the programme.

All applicants will receive vaccination screening at the University Health Centre on commencement of their programme.

Disclosure of Criminal Background
To help the University reduce the risk of harm or injury to any member of its community caused by the criminal behaviour of other students, it must know about any relevant criminal convictions an applicant has.

Relevant criminal convictions are only those convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. Convictions that are spent (as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974) are not considered to be relevant and you should not reveal them.

If you are applying for courses in teaching, health, social work and courses involving work with children or vulnerable adults, you must complete the section of your UCAS application form entitled 'Criminal Convictions'. You must disclose any criminal convictions, including spent sentences and cautions (including verbal cautions) and bindover orders. Further information on how to complete this section is available from the UCAS booklet 'How to Apply'. For these courses, applicants are required to undergo police clearance for entry and will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure form. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. It replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA). Access to the DBS checking service is only available to registered employers who are entitled by law to ask an individual to reveal their full criminal history, including spent convictions - also known as asking 'an exempted question'. The University is such a 'registered employer' and will send you the appropriate documents to fill in if you are offered a place in the course.

If you are convicted of a relevant criminal offence after you have applied, you must inform the university immediately. Do not send details of the offence; simply tell the University that you have a relevant criminal conviction. You may then be asked to supply more details.

Anti-fraud Checks
Please note that the University follows anti-fraud procedures to detect and prevent fraudulent applications. If it is found that an applicant supplies a fraudulent application then it will be withdrawn.

The University reserves the right to cancel an application or withdraw any offer made if it is found that an application contains false, plagiarised or misleading information.


Disabled Students

Northumbria welcomes enquiries and applications from disabled students whether disability is due to mobility or sensory impairment, specific learning difficulties, mental health issues or a medical condition. Applications from disabled students are processed in the usual way, but applicants should declare their disability at the application stage so that the University can contact them to assess how to meet any support needs they may have. Academic Language Skills PG (Social Work, Education & Community Wellbeing) (Optional,0 Credits)

The purpose of this module is to develop the participant’s ability in study skills and English language skills for academic purposes.

The module is designed to develop the participants as independent learners. The module is supported by a teaching and learning plan which outlines the formal sessions, together with the tutor-directed study and independent reading. An interactive approach to seminars will draw upon the directed learning undertaken and participants’ own experience of study skills. Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading, preparation for interactive activities and use of the discussion board on the e-learning platform.
Independent learning will focus upon the participants identifying those skills which they need to develop and understand through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, and reflection. The sessions will attempt to follow the principles set out by the CEM model (Sloan and Porter, 2008)

Research Methods in Education and Training (Optional,30 Credits)

This module provides the underpinning skills and knowledge necessary to undertake independent research in education and training at Level 7. It will give you the opportunity to develop practical and theoretical skills in the use and understanding of different research paradigms, methodological approaches and their associated research methods. You will also develop an in-depth understanding of related issues, including but not restricted to, ethical concerns, data management and analysis, the use conceptual frameworks and how to engage critically with the literature. The module has a strong focus on practice, and you will be encouraged to take this as your starting point, to question and problematize professional concerns, and to develop those as research problems and questions.

This will provide you with a framework to critique and question research, policy and practice and their impact on Education and Training. Drawing on this, you will be able to develop a research proposal which addresses a professional concern, drawing on contemporary and relevant research literature in order to analyse and justify your methodological approach. You will also be supported to explore subject based literature in order to support your identification and exploration of a research problem.

Inclusive Practice/SEN - School Practitioner Perspective (Optional,30 Credits)

This module gives you the opportunity to explore issues, understandings and knowledge of Inclusive practice in the school setting to include that of children with special educational needs. You will partake in critical discourse with regard to pertinent issues of the inclusive practice /SEN agenda.

Educational Leadership and Management (Optional,30 Credits)

This module considers what constitutes effective management and leadership within the national and cultural context of the UK educational system with reference to the cultural contexts of other educational systems. Students will explore theories and models of educational management and leadership and will apply these to critiques of examples of educational practice re management and leadership drawn from their own experiences and from current research.

Leading Learning (Optional,30 Credits)

This module will provide you with an opportunity to analyse in depth what is meant by the concept of leading learning. This includes reflection on your role as a leader who creates a vision and climate in the school/ college/other educational establishment or setting, in which there is a strong focus on learning. It will involve you exploring new ideas about teaching, the curriculum and continuing staff development, together with a commitment to monitoring, evaluation and review of practice.

The module will provide you with a framework to examine your role as an educational leader and the influence and impact you have on institutional culture and climate. There will also be an opportunity to examine in detail how effectively you and other educational leaders engage the learning community in a rigorous process of monitoring, evaluation and review, linked to internal and external evaluation procedures. The module will also enable you to examine ways in which the role of parents and other stakeholders contributes to effective outcomes for learners, as well as enabling you to develop their personal knowledge, understanding and skills in these key areas of leadership.

Teaching and Learning (Optional,30 Credits)

This module is intended to give students who are either professionals working within education or those who are intending to work in education an opportunity to develop their knowledge of both pedagogy and andragogy. The module will take the learner on a journey through the ideology that shapes the way in which education is both defined and organised and the theoretical dissonance between theories of learning and formal education. The focus is broad as you are encouraged to consider all aspects of teaching and learning in the statutory, further/higher and lifelong learning sectors.

In this module you will have the opportunity to analyse, in–depth, what is meant by the concept of curriculum development. This includes reflection on the curriculum leader’s role in creating a vision and climate in the school or other educational establishment, on which there is a strong focus on learning, where new ideas about teaching, the curriculum and continuing staff development are taken seriously, together with a commitment to monitoring, evaluation and review of practice.

The aim of the module is to develop an understanding of the Education system in England; where it has come from and how it works in practice today. • Apply an appropriate perspective to a facet of education in terms of the system as a whole.
• Understand systematically the rationale for key features in the modern day education system
• Critically analyse and reflect upon key issues within the education system in England

This module is designed to develop a comprehensive understanding of a range of ideas, concepts and theories that will help you to become engaged in a well informed and meaningful work-based enquiry and project management. Through a combination of seminar and inter-session activities the module will help you to develop a critical awareness of a range of appropriate approaches to project planning, implementation and evaluation appropriate to your own organisational and professional context.

The Empirical Project (Optional,60 Credits)

You will be encouraged to critically explore a range of approaches to research however emphaisis will be placed on your understanding of the world view, design and meaning system that will drive your own research study. It is assumed that prior to the undertaking of this dissertation module you will have undertaken study that prepares you for engagement with a Masters dissertation process and that you will have constructed a robust research proposal that has gained or is in the process of gaining ethical approval from both the University and (if applicable) your employing organisation. In the module you will revisit and deepen your understandings of a range of key topic areas linked to the empirical research process, this will include discussion of world views and research paradigms, the research question, aim or hypothesis, research design, working with literature and theory, developing ethical codes, constructing the research sample, collecting robust research evidence, ensuring quality assurance within your research work, analysing both qualitative and quantitative evidence and writing and disseminating the research dissertation work. You will be invited to attend a series of research seminars during the module and you will have access to a named Higher Education supervisor for one to one tutorial work. Both the seminars and tutorials will encourage you to apply the key areas of learning within this module to your own professional context and field of expertise. This will enable you to critically examine how the empirical research process will work best for your research goals and design.

Systematic Appraisal in Education and Training (Optional,60 Credits)

In this module you will focus on the role of the practitioner as a research user. You will have the opportunity to make effective and systematic use of published research to inform education practice and/or policy. Through the process of the systematic appraisal, you will develop enhanced critical appraisal skills. The systematic appraisal project will address research questions which arise from your specific practice/field of expertise. These questions may address:
• Effectiveness of single/definable interventions in order to state and recommend best practice/provide evidence based guidelines for practice.
• Evaluation of appropriateness/acceptability/process/outcomes of educational provision in order to improve/develop/inform practice.
• The service user experience of education services.
• Relationships between practitioners and service users.
• Theoretical and ideological issues of relevance to education practice and/or policy.
Published work to be included in the appraisal may be either entirely quantitative, entirely qualitative or mixed method. The philosophical perspective of both the research question and the appraisal methodology must be examined.
The focus of this module is a small scale systematic review which students undertake with the support of an experienced academic research supervisor. Peer support is also encouraged through student led seminars.

Work Based Dissertation (Optional,60 Credits)

This module is designed to promote your personal development and a range of inter-personal, intellectual and practical (functional) skills based on and demonstrated through an individually negotiated real-time work-based dissertation that will be of benefit to your employing organisation. It seeks to raise your awareness of the workplace as a learning environment, extend your capability and enhance your individual effectiveness, employability and business competitiveness. It will focus on organisational-based issues and seek to develop your skills in the diagnosis of problems, research and analysis. You will develop strategies to address problems and techniques of presentation. You will demonstrate that appropriate ethical, commercial, confidentiality and data protection issues are taken into consideration. You will be expected to reflect on the learning derived from carrying out the dissertation.
