What will I learn on this module?

This module will develop the students ability to demonstrate, on an individual basis, their technical skills in designing, analysing and applying technology and engineering design to a particular task. The module also will help develop self reliance and individual responsibility.
The student will be provided with a range of predefined project titles and specifications, in the appropriate technological area, at the start of semester 1 of the session.

To meet University requirements and gain practical experience, students must perform a risk assessment to identify potential risks/hazards associated with the project.

During semester 1, the student will produce a planning/progress report. With their supervisor’s guidance, this will help the student to develop some of the key skills necessary to carry out a significant engineering project. These skills include how to prepare a project plan, how to prepare a time schedule for a project, how to do a literature search and analyse different engineering systems / projects related to their project.
In semester 2, the students must produce a final report. This report will build upon the first report and further develop key engineering skills such as time management, analysing their own performance in relation to the original time schedule. At the end of semester two each individual student will be required to provide practical demonstration / poster presentation to the supervisor, second markers and peers.

By following this process students will develop key transferable skills that can be applied to most industries.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will be delivered via a combination of introductory lectures and progress review meetings with supervisors. The introductory lectures will focus on providing the students with advice and guidance on general aspects of project management and report writing skills.

Supervision of the project involves regular meetings between the project student and a project supervisor. These meetings allow the student to receive guidance and formative feedback in order to steer them to successful completion of the project. These meetings also provide the student with an opportunity to develop their verbal communication skills.

The module requires a significant proportion of self-directed independent learning within the framework of the project plan and supervisor’s guidance and feedback. Overall, learning will be through the input from lectures and supervision and the student’s active development, execution and monitoring of the project plan.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

As indicated, introductory lectures will support the student by providing advice and guidance on general aspects of project management and report writing skills. The key support will be provided by the regular meetings with their supervisor for guidance and formative feedback in order to steer them to successful completion of the project. These meetings also provide the student with an opportunity to develop their verbal communication skills.
The most appropriate use of blackboard (online platform) is made in the module where the module taught content is provided along with links to the reading list. Online screen videos are included on the elp platform to help students understanding of both general concepts related to project management and more specific concepts related to individual project areas.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• Undertake an engineering problem from initial design to final completion. (UK-SPEC SM1,SM2,US3, D3).

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

• Apply their existing knowledge to identify the correct methods to solve a specific engineering problem. (UK-SPEC SM1, SM2, E1, D1)
• Plan and organise a project with time scales, costs and sourcing of required parts and equipment (UK-SPEC D5).
• Communicate the information verbally and via a written report and documentation (UK-SPEC D6).

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• Consider the wider aspects of an engineering problem, including environmental, health and safety and risk assessment issues (UK-SPEC D2,S2).

How will I be assessed?

The module will be assessed by two components: a planning and progress report at the end of semester 1 (40%), a final report at the end of semester 2 (50%), and a practical demonstration / poster at the end of semester 2 (10%).

Formative feedback will be given though fortnightly meetings with project supervisors





Module abstract

In this module you will undertake an engineering project from initial conception to final design. You will initially carry out a project planning exercise that will help you develop your project. Following this you will complete the project by researching different ideas and developing a project of your own. You will be provided with a supervisor who will support you through this process. Together with individual guidance from your supervisor, you will receive support in the form of lectures, which will be recorded live and will be available online for you to watch in your own time. For this module, there is a wide range of projects to choose from different areas of engineering, depending upon your interest. Many of these are linked to the research and / or industrial experience of the departments lecturers. Our academics are all heavily involved in researching new ideas and technology and this is reflected in our teaching, so you can experience the next generation of technology whilst it is still being developed. You will also get to experience practical sessions in our state-of-the-art engineering facilities, which are highly regarded as being amongst the best in the UK.
