Are you keen to develop your existing engineering skills and knowledge to Masters level?

The MSc Engineering Management course has been specifically designed to allow you to update, extend and deepen your understanding of engineering and management.

You will build on your current knowledge of subjects such as solid modelling and prototyping, computer aided design and engineering data analysis, whilst developing management and entrepreneurial skills that will enhance your career opportunities within engineering and the broader business environment.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time to gain all-important work experience and employability skills.  You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to source opportunities and to perfect their CV but ultimately the onus is on the student to secure the internship position through a competitive application process.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Engineering, Physics and Materials Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

Study Abroad

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. If you take the Study Abroad option you will spend a semester at one of these partners, continuing your studies in English but in a new cultural and learning environment. Please note that this option may require you to obtain a visa for study in the other country.

With the increasing complexity of the engineering sector there is a requirement for engineering managers to be specialised not just in engineering, but also in wider business and management. This course has been specifically designed to meet the demands of today’s employers and provide a solid foundation for you to progress to management level.

The structure of this course has been designed to focus on engineering issues and processes, and how they apply to those in management positions.

This course incorporates six taught modules: research methods, project, programme and portfolio management; project change, risk and opportunities management; technology entrepreneurship and product development; engineering management data analysis and sustainable development for engineering practitioners.

Throughout the duration of this course you will build core skills in key areas such as management, business, finance and computing, providing you with a strong understanding of the day-to-day processes that underpin the smooth running of a successful organisation.

This course is primarily delivered by lectures and supporting seminars such as guided laboratory workshops or staffed tutorials. Assessments are undertaken in the form of exams, assignments, technical reports, presentations and project work. The Advanced Practice semester will be assessed via a report and presentation about your internship, study abroad or research group activities.

On completion of all taught modules you will undertake a substantial piece of research around a subject of particular interest to you and your own career aspirations.

Throughout the duration of your course you will have access to our dedicated engineering laboratories that are continuously updated to reflect real-time industry practice.

Our facilities include mechanical and energy systems experimentation labs, rapid product development and performance analysis, materials testing and characterisation, 3D digital design and manufacturing process performance.

You will be given the opportunity to get hands-on with testing, materials processing, moulding, thermal analysis and 3D rapid manufacture to help you create the products and systems required for the projects you will work on during your course.

Your learning journey will also be supported by technology such as discussion boards and video tutorials. You will also participate in IT workshops where you will learn how to use the latest industry-standard software.

Videos of lectures will on many occasions be made available through Panopto video software to further support teaching delivery.

Research Methods (Core, 20 Credits)

Training in research methods provides researchers with an understanding of the 'dos' and 'don'ts' that are associated with employing particular approaches to the collection and analysis of data. Awareness of research methodologies and methods will enable researchers to practice appropriate techniques and to implement methods accurately. The primary aim of the module is to inform and sensitize you to the choices that are available when planning to undertake a research project. This includes making you aware of a selected range of natural and social scientific research methods that can be employed to collect and analyse primary and secondary data arising from qualitative and quantitative paradigms. Such awareness will enable you to make appropriate choices when executing your own research investigation. Of equal importance, the module will also introduce you to a range of generic academic skills that will support you during your programme of study in addition to the execution of your research project. The module will also provide you with instruction to help you formalize and write a creative research project proposal in readiness for undertaking the KB7052 Research Project module.

Project, Programme and Portfolio Management (Core, 20 Credits)

You will develop conceptual understanding around, appreciate the characteristics of, and be able to evaluate, projects. You will also develop an understanding of the project management role, and the relevant approaches, skills, tools and techniques available to a practicing project manager. You will be introduced to the dynamics associated with project teams and stakeholders. The module will consider projects within the wider context of programmes and portfolio management. This management of projects, programmes and portfolios is often referred to as P3 management, thus, you will have a basic understanding of complex scenarios of multiple and major projects environments.
You will be able to critically evaluate project management knowledge and competencies, reflect on lessons from project case studies, as well as the processes, methods and technologies used by Project Managers and Project Management Offices (PMO’s) in P3 management. You will also embrace the necessary ethical and professional standards to potentially attain competence in the future management of P3 projects.

Project change, risk and opportunities management (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn about the theories and practices that inform the steering of projects for the delivery of benefits and how they enable you to respond to the challenges of managing organisational change initiatives.
The module integrates several topics under each of the competencies within relevant Project Management Bodies of Knowledge: Contextual, Behavioural and Technical.
You will learn to:
• ensure that benefits are understood and pursued through reliable decision-making
• promote effective identification of risks and opportunities throughout the life-cycle of projects
• enable processes that capture and assess potential changes to project scope
• Identify and customise governance frameworks that successfully integrate stakeholders behaviours and expectations
• Recognise the Interpersonal skills required to motivate and coordinate people to achieve specified objectives throughout the change process.

Sustainable Development for Engineering Practitioners (Core, 20 Credits)

This module will develop your understanding of the fundamentals of sustainable and ethical development for engineering practitioners, requiring your consideration of role and responsibility of the engineer within society. You will explore the fundamentals of sustainable development as they relate to decision making in engineering, for example consideration of; legislation, economics, energy, materials, environment and society.

During your study you will consider the challenges engineering activities present society and the future of our planet and seek solutions through the use of various techniques and tools such as the triple bottom line, stakeholder analysis, the circular economy, carbon footprint, material and energy supply chains and risk, the ethics of sustainable development and software tools for eco audit and life cycle assessment.

You will learn how to present a rational argument for sustainable solutions using both qualitative and quantitative data sources and tools using a wide range of published literature and also from your own experience.

Engineering Management Data Analysis (Core, 20 Credits)

Analysis of data is an important task in many disciplines. Trends, correlation of variables, quality control and minimisation of hazardous events are some examples of application of data analysis. You will learn to analyse a range of engineering management problems, and you will build appropriate probabilistic models to support and arrive at sound decisions for non-trivial problems with the aid of computer software tools. You will learn specifically about the followings:

• The application of mathematical techniques to engineering management data analysis problems
o Univariate and multivariate analysis
o Correlation, regression and interpolation - dealing with variations and interpreting the output statistically
o Modelling of parameters involving uncertainty using a range of probability density functions, e.g. normal and beta distributions
• Probabilistic modelling of engineering problems using software tools
o analytical approach
o numerical approach
o Monte Carlo Simulation technique
• Integrating technicality into decision making support incorporating techno-economic, risk and other criteria
• Justification for a defensible solution under uncertainty and multiple criteria
• Documentation, presenting options using technical data, arguments for justifiable and defensible solutions to nontrivial problems.

Technology Entrepreneurship & Product Development (Core, 20 Credits)

You will learn how to maintain a business start up research and planning portfolio that demonstrates studies and thinking relating to aspects of business concept development/review, product/service definition, marketing and MR and business finance issues. The portfolio will include a detailed business plan for the start of a small business to exploit the defined business concept and a research project that will analyse the skills and competencies required to become an entrepreneur and critically evaluate the information resources available to support your business start-up investigation.

Academic Language Skills for Mechanical and Construction Engineering (Optional, 0 Credits)

Academic skills when studying away from your home institution can differ due to cultural and language differences in teaching and assessment practices. This module is designed to support your transition in the use and practice of technical language and subject specific skills around assessments and teaching provision in your chosen subject area in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment. The overall aim of this module is to develop your abilities to read and study effectively for academic purposes; to develop your skills in analysing and using source material in seminars and academic writing and to develop your use and application of language and communications skills to a higher level.

The topics you will cover on the module include:

• Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions.
• Developing academic writing skills, including citation, paraphrasing, and summarising.
• Practising ‘critical reading’ and ‘critical writing’.
• Planning and structuring academic assignments (e.g. essays, reports and presentations).
• Avoiding academic misconduct and gaining credit by using academic sources and referencing effectively.
• Listening skills for lectures.
• Speaking in seminar presentations.
• Giving discipline-related academic presentations, experiencing peer observation, and receiving formative feedback.
• Speed reading techniques.
• Discussing ethical issues in research, and analysing results.
• Describing bias and limitations of research.
• Developing self-reflection skills.

Research Project (Core, 60 Credits)

The module will build upon the concepts and theories presented during the KB7030 Research Methods module. It will require you to develop, consolidate, and apply your independent research, academic study, and research project management skills to the investigation of a topic of your own choice (or a topic that has been pre-approved and recommended by the module tutor) that is relevant to your programme of study. You will be required to undertake analytical and evaluative research that will result in the production of a research publication, either as a journal paper or a dissertation. If you choose to present your research project and findings as a journal paper, you will be required to comply with the presentation and formatting requirements stipulated by the publisher of the pre-selected, module-approved research journal. If you undertake a work-based study, you are not permitted to present your research project and findings as a journal paper. Alternatively, if you choose to present your research project and findings as a dissertation, you will be able to undertake a study that will lead to the presentation of either a traditional or work-based dissertation and subsequently required to comply with the presentation and formatting requirements stipulated in the module handbook. Pre-selected, module-approved research journals to which you will be required to ‘theoretically’ aim to submit your journal paper will be listed in the module handbook.

Engineering and Environment Advanced Practice (Core, 60 Credits)

This 60 credit module is designed for all full-time postgraduate programmes within the Faculty of Engineering and Environment and provides you with the option to either study abroad, undertake a work placement or join a research group for one semester as part of your programme. This experience gives you the opportunity to apply skills and knowledge acquired during the taught part of your programme and to acquire new skills and knowledge in an alternative learning environment. Specific learning will be defined in a personal learning contract.

Your Advanced Practice semester will be assessed on a pass/fail basis and as such, it does not contribute to the classification of your degree. However when taken and passed it is recognised both in your transcript as a 60 credit Advanced Practice Module and in your degree title.
