About this course 2015/16

This course gives you the opportunity to graduate with a BA English Language Studies (Hons), or with BA English Language with TESOL (Hons) if you are interested in pursuing a career in teaching and choose to take TESOL-related modules.

This stimulating course asks key questions such as: What is the relationship between language and thought? What is the history of the English language and how did language evolve? Why is it that different speakers of English speak the same language differently? How do gender, social class and education influence language use?

English Language is a flexible and adaptable subject that opens up a range of career choices. Graduates from this course have taken up employment in many professions including journalism, marketing and PR, teaching, librarianship and speech and language therapy.

You will study a range of core modules in the areas of English grammar, discourse analysis, language acquisition, history and varieties of English and sociolinguistics. In addition, students choose from a good selection of option modules, so you can focus on the areas that interest you most.

So, if you want to build on your existing knowledge of English and join the 95% of our graduates who go on to employment or further study after six months (Unistats 2014), English Language at Northumbria is the course for you.

NSS image94% of students said that overall they were satisfied with the quality of this course.
