The BA (Hons) in English Literature and Creative Writing at Northumbria is a dynamic and exciting course, intended not only for writers, but for anyone with a lively interest in reading and writing.

During your studies, you will gain a much deeper knowledge of literature and the creative process, whilst looking at the ways in which these two related subjects inform each other. Our students on the English and Creative Writing degree emphasise the strong sense of community fostered across their three years of study, as well as the benefits of our varied methods of teaching and assessment.

You will experienced formal lectures, small seminar groups and creative writing workshops, with assessment ranging from the conventional essay and exam, to more innovative methods related to web-based learning.

We will help you to identify your strengths and interests as a writer, by giving you the opportunity to write in a range of genres including fiction, poetry and scriptwriting, whilst also examining a broad range of literature stretching from the Renaissance to the present day.

You will learn from the best researchers and writers in the field, all of whom are published academics and creative practitioners. Our teaching team publish worldwide in a range of media and have strong links with the writing community, including New Writing North.

The degree will develop your confidence as an independent writer and critic, allowing you to explore different facets of writing, experiment in different forms, develop practical skills, and work in vibrant dialogue with fellow students and tutors. In the third year you can choose a major creative project or dissertation topic that really inspires you. You will graduate with a versatile skills set valued by employers nationally and internationally. Our course has a strong emphasis on employability, with designated modules on the degree addressing this very topic. The BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing degree will be particularly valuable to aspiring authors or those with plans to pursue a career in publishing, advertising, journalism, teaching, or further study, as well as a wealth of other employment opportunities.
