What will I learn on this module?

This module supports you to develop key attributes which focus on your development as an ‘emerging leader’. The module incorporates the Northumbria University Student Employability and Leadership Attributes framework. This framework is used not only to support you as an emerging leader but to help you develop an understanding of your own employability and the graduate labour market. The module helps you to do this by developing further skills and competencies which will enhance your own employability.

At the end of this module you will have demonstrated and evaluated your own personal and professional development as an emerging leader and considered your own future career strategy.

• Envisioning the future for your venture
• Graduate and entrepreneurial identity
• Ethical Issues and Sustainability
• Problem based Entrepreneurial leadership

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through workshops, work-based independent experiential based learning. The workshops will introduce you to the Northumbria University Student Employability and Leadership Attributes Framework and to relevant theories and concepts linked to developing yourself as an emerging leader.

Within these workshops you will also have the opportunity to work on developing and exhibiting attributes of an emerging leader through activities which will be supported by your tutor. The module uses new and innovative, technology enhanced ways to support you in developing and articulating these attributes.

Using team supported experienced-based know-how while developing your business ideas will give you a greater understanding of the topics and the opportunity to reflect on your own professional development.

The flexible approach to learning emphasises the notion of learning rather than teaching, this will give you the freedom to influence the direction of your own learning. Your tutor will provide you with a Teaching and Learning plan which will support you in engaging in a substantial amount of independent learning. This plan provides prompted reading and suggested activities to support your learning.
An ‘assessment for learning’ approach will be used to support your progress as the assessment plan will require you to reflect on your experience with your business projects as a way of enhancing learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by a team of academic staff who will provide you with a Teaching and Learning plan to guide your progress who will lead your development and provide guidance through practical workshops. The module is supported by an e-learning portal (eLP) which will provide you with workshop materials alongside videos and other electronic support facilities.

A key component of the module is an electronic reading list which comprises a number of key academic text, journal articles and published reports which support the development of your knowledge on this module.

The module provides formative feedback on your skills development and progress at regular milestones throughout the module, culminating in a summative assessment of a portfolio and presentation.

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of attributes contributing towards the development of an emerging leader.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
2. Critically evaluate your personal practice and professional impact as an emerging leader in your target opportunity.

3. Develop the ability to articulate your own professional attributes as an emerging leader.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

4. Demonstrate an understanding of relevant social and ethical issues are relevant to business/organisational environment.

How will I be assessed?

The assessment for this module is split into two portfolios which include a number of different assessments;

Assessment one 40%
This individual assignment will require you to research opportunities available to you after graduation and to reflect on the most suitable path.
You should reflect on the skills and attributes you have developed and discuss how these are aligned to your chosen opportunity.
You should provide evidence of how you intend achieve your chosen goal/s. (MLO 1,2)

Assessment two 60%
This individual assignment will require you to take a holistic view in considering the key entrepreneurial or employability attributes you have developed as an emerging leader.

You will also be required you to discuss the relevant social and ethical issues around entrepreneurial leadership and how you have negotiated these while developing and running your ventures. (MLO3, 4)

Module abstract

‘Leading for Impact’ supports you in developing the key attributes of an emerging leader, alongside developing your knowledge and understanding of your own employability in a novel way. The module prepares you for graduate life by allowing you to reflect on your personal skills and articulate them in a meaningful way through the Northumbria University Employability and Leadership Attributes Framework. The module provides you with the space to reflect and understand your time at Northumbria University and give forethought to your career and enterprise priorities for your future career.
