What will I learn on this module?

The module is structured into two parts. The first term lectures and workshops will equip you with a visual understanding and practical methods, including graphics packages, critical visual methodologies, cartography and zine making. You will explore challenging contemporary ideas in geography around theoretical understandings of the visual. The second half of the module is primarily driven by your critical visual practice as you research and create on your project for the end of module exhibition. This will be supported by tutorials and crits providing sustained formative feedback. The module finishes with a public exhibition of your work. The experience of practiced based learning and public exhibition of work is designed to boost your self-confidence and develop novel skills supporting future career development

How will I learn on this module?

From the very first week you will learn by making and using images, in particular in the workshops will involve the students in doing photography, image production and exhibition. A lecture spine module will introduce students to key ideas; the significance of photographs, different types of photograph (e.g. documentary, popular), key methods (e.g. composition, semiology) and how to develop a workbook of ideas and images. Workshops will run alongside the lectures, including visiting artists to talk through their process and visual methodologies. You will access to state of the art creative packages e.g .Photoshop and Illustrator through the University’s IT In each workshop the first half will be spent working in groups developing ideas for representing selected images or ideas. In the second half we will go take the photographs and have them available to critique the following week. Pictures will be placed on Blackboard and a notice board week by week so students can see their work.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Tutors will provide extensive support in workshops and throughout the practice-led second half of the module through individual and group tutorials, and crits and show n’ tell sessions focused on your work. This is in addition to the usual staff open door policy and email support. There will probably be an after show celebration of your successes.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• MLO 1: Critically discuss and evaluate the key debates and methods in contemporary visual culture and geography

• MLO 2: Critically assess the significance of visual culture: the place and power of visual methodologies

• MLO 3: Plan, create and exhibit a visual portfolio representing a chosen theme form the geographical and environmental disciplines

• MLO 4: Effectively use and apply appropriate graphics packages, zine creation, exhibition, maintaining a visual diary to develop novel skills supporting employability.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

• MLO 5: Evaluate and reflect on your own experience by developing and practicing a reflective and personal research practice

How will I be assessed?

The first assessment (30%) at the end of the first semester will be a visualisation, graphic, poster or similar to demonstrate formal use of visual methodology within a more conventional academic context.

The final assessment (70%) will be a creative portfolio of visual work, e.g .photographic, zines or an installation, which you have built up over the second semester. The precise format will be your choice. Whilst the final mark is all for this piece the various elements of it will receive detailed formative assessment along the way (MLO 1-4). The visual elements will be complemented by a visual diary, a reflexive record of your work (MLO 5)

Before your start you will produce a visual design brief, a bit like a project proposal, which outlines what you will be doing and why (MLO1-4). This will receive detailed formative feedback to help you get started on the exhibition piece.

Module abstract

You live in a world saturated with visual images, you are highly visually literate (even if you do not know it) and probably at least half-alert to the challenges and potential of visual images as a means of representing the world. Yet you have little opportunity to explore geography and the environment through visual culture, both of these disciplines with a strong history of using images as key resources and tools. In this module you will use photography, visualisation, cartography, comic books and maybe even edible pictures to explore chosen themes form the geographical and environmental disciplines, develop a critical visual methodology and apply and practise the skills to a visual project on a topic of your choice and to reflect on your own perceptions and representations of your geography and environment.
