What will I learn on this module?

This module will introduce you to a range of practical techniques as well as discipline specific research skills which are used within exercise science. You will be introduced to a variety of techniques that are used by researchers in the department (measuring brain blood flow, neuromuscular function, muscle architecture etc.) and generic research skills (searching for electronic resources, précising of research manuscripts, responding to reviewers’ comments, research funding and participant recruitment) that are necessary for research within exercise science.

How will I learn on this module?

The module will comprise of a combination of seminars, laboratory practicals and small group tutorials led by experienced senior researchers. In these sessions you will critique methodologies in each research area and the theory behind the techniques. You will be afforded the opportunity to take part in relevant practical sessions and will be provided with instruction and guidance on the use of specific exercise science practical techniques. Senior researchers will also deliver practical training on the generic research skills listed above.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be expected to engage with weekly independent reading and critical discussion with both your peers and members of staff. This will be supported both in-class and by online resources. Support will include feedback from tutors during small-group seminars and tutorials. In addition tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board at the University’s eLearning Portal so that the whole group can benefit.

How will I be assessed?

This module requires completion of two pieces of summative assessment, being:

Oral Presentation (50% weighting, 15 min, K&U 1, IPSA 1, PVA 1):

This oral presentation will provide a detailed a critical evaluation of a research technique commonly used in exercise science. Following an introduction and overview of the techniques you will critically evaluate how it has been used in a recent research study.

Poster Presentation (50% weighting, 5 min, K&U 2, IPSA 1, PVA 1):

For this assessment you will provide a poster presentation detailing your thesis proposal. You will need to have a critical awareness of the proposed methods and understand what formulates a sound ethical study proposal. The poster presentation will be in the setting of a mini conference.

The lecturer will be responsible for guiding you in your pursuit of knowledge, providing formative feedback during this process. This will take the form of questions prompting you to question your new knowledge, and verbal feedback on the depth and criticality of your interactions with the topic under study. Written summative feedback will be provided. Both generic (posted to the e-learning portal) and individual summative feedback will be provided on assessment components.


Feedback is provided on the presentation mark sheets. General assessment feedback is posted to the e-learning portal. Formative feedback is provided throughout the lecture and practical sessions.

Module abstract

This module introduces students to a range of practical techniques as well as discipline specific and generic research skills which are of relevance to research performed in exercise science. Two hour weekly seminars/laboratory sessions will address techniques and skills. Various techniques (measuring brain blood flow, neuromuscular function, muscle architecture etc.) and generic research skills (searching for electronic resources, précising of research manuscripts, responding to reviewers’ comments, research funding and participant recruitment) will be introduced. Seminars will cover the rationale for the use of particular techniques and will address the generic research skills, whilst the lab classes will enable students to engage with the associated methodology.
