What will I learn on this module?
This research experience module provides you with the opportunity to participate in a laboratory-based research project within one of the research groups present in the Department. The research experience will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge associated with running an empirical project in a laboratory/research group setting. You will be advised to meet with your research experience supervisor and negotiate a work plan for the semester; you will then provide a written statement of the agreed plan together with the particular work objectives that must then be validated by the supervisor. The project you are involved in will have already been granted institutional ethical approval and it is expected that students will be involved in the day-to-day running of a study (i.e., collecting data and analysing particular data sets or re analysing collected data). The primary intention is that you are given a ‘hands-on’ experience in the certain skills that underpin scientific research in exercise science.
How will I learn on this module?
Under the supervisor’s guidance, you will be involved in the day to day running of a study; collecting the data and analysing particular data sets or analysing data that has already been collected. The research experience module provides you with the opportunity to gain practical experience of the research process. You will be able to call on the support and guidance of an individual supervisor and meet regularly with during the initial weeks of the module, and later as is appropriate to the stage of study.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
At the beginning of the second semester you will be met by the module leader who will provide an overview of the projects which are available to work on. You will be asked to choose your top three choices and where possible we will place students with their preferential choice. When you have been allocated a project to work on you will be encouraged to meet with your supervisor to agree on a plan for your involvement in the project. Thereafter, you will be encouraged to meet regularly with the supervisor and other members of the research team. The supervisor will provide support and guidance for the project write up.
What will I be expected to read on this module?
All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. The reading list for this module can be found at: http://readinglists.northumbria.ac.uk
(Reading List service online guide for academic staff this containing contact details for the Reading List team – http://library.northumbria.ac.uk/readinglists)
What will I be expected to achieve?
Knowledge & Understanding:
You will be expected to:
1. Critically consider the relevant background literature underpinning the study.
2. Communicate the theoretical and applied aspects of the research.
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
You will be expected to:
1. Manage the day to day running of an empirical research study.
2. Be involved with aspects of data collection and/or data analysis whilst providing a critical interpretation of the data.
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
You will be expected to:
1. Provide appropriate feedback on the research to all relevant parties.
How will I be assessed?
This module requires completion of one summative assessment, being:
Written Laboratory Report (100% weighting, 4,000 words max, K&U 1, 2, IPSA 1, 2 PVA 1):
At the end of Semester 2 you will submit a laboratory report which is no longer than 4,000 words. The laboratory report will detail the rational and findings for the project you have been involved in.
Your supervisor and module tutor will be responsible for guiding you in your pursuit of knowledge, providing formative feedback during this process. This will take the form of questions prompting you to question your new knowledge, and verbal feedback on the depth and criticality of your interactions with the topic under study. Written summative feedback will be provided. Both generic (posted to the e-learning portal) and individual summative feedback will be provided on the assessment component.
You will get weekly oral feedback during meetings with their supervisor. Written feedback will be provided on the written assignment. All marks are posted on the e-learning portal, and an email is sent to you providing generic feedback and average marks for the module to help you judge your relative performance. You are encouraged to attend individual tutorial sessions with module tutors if you wish to discuss your work. Furthermore, you will also be asked to reflect on you research experience in a 500 word written piece.
