GD4009 - THE TOOLKIT: Being Prepared

What will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will have the opportunity to learn about the expressive and creative potential offered by graphic design technical processes and techniques. These will be further enhanced by introductions to a variety of Graphic Design technical processes in a blend of workshop and on-line environments.
You will be encouraged to recognise how learning through challenging Graphic Design technical processes in this module can underpin novel and experimental approaches to problem-based work throughout the Graphic Design programme.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a blend of on-line and practical studio and workshop-based learning activities and independent studies. Your learning will depend predominantly on the acquisition of knowledge, craft and intellectual skills from your engagement with technical sessions along with challenging creative Graphic Design problems.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Your learning will be supported by feedback from tutors, which will be provided on an on-going basis during studio working sessions and workshops. Experienced technical support staff will provide demonstration and technical knowledge through timetabled on-line or workshop based sessions.
You will be supported in your learning by a team of accomplished lecturers and technicians who have a wide range of experience in the field of Graphic Design as practitioners, teachers and academics who make full use of both traditional teaching methods and advanced teaching and learning tools. You will have the support of an exceptional library, a technical resource centre, and student support services.

How will I be assessed?

Students will be assessed against a staff approved brief of their own creation with consideration to the creative processes deployed and the assigned learning outcomes highlighted in the module descriptor.
The assessment and feedback strategy is;
a. Formative Assessment?You will receive verbalformative feedback both individually and in groups throughout the module. This feedback will facilitate development of your two assignments. This feedback will allow you to reflect upon your own work and act upon feedback prior to final submission.
b. Summative assessment
The project brief/s driving the module will identify the assessment criteria and submission requirements (deliverables) appropriate to the topic of the project. This will enable you to demonstrate the process and technical skills developed throughout the module. A single grade will then be aligned to the submission based upon the deliverables.
c. Feedback strategy?Feedback will be delivered verballyat the point of each seminar, where discussion will clarify future direction.
Final project submission will be as part of the end of year degree show and by student presentation, after which staff will assess the submission, and submit your externally moderated grade to the University.
This module is exempt from the Anonymous Marking
Policy. The nature of working closely and directly with the students in workshops makes anonymity unfeasible.

Module abstract

‘Learning by doing’ is the focus for this module, in which you will be introduced to a range of processes and techniques for producing your graphic design creative solutions.
You will be introduced to a range of creative making and visualising skills that you can then apply what you have learned intellectually.
This blended approach to creative experimentation will enable you to build a foundation of technical knowledge that you can apply to your own future design practice.
