About this course 2015/16

Fascinated by the past? Want to enhance your historical knowledge while developing the skills needed in today’s employment market? This degree in History offers a richly varied curriculum covering British, American, European and world history from the medieval period to the present day.

You will engage with a range of exciting and challenging topics including the development of British and European society, political and social activism, and numerous modules focusing on specific historical events such as the Irish Revolution and the Vietnam War.

NSS image91% of History students say that they are satisfied with the teaching on their course and 90% agree that Northumbria staff make the subject interesting.

You will be taught by research-active academics who will encourage you to think critically about the past while also engaging actively with the world around you.

The quality of publications written by History staff is ranked in the top 20 in the United Kingdom.

You will therefore be taught by staff who are internationally recognised leaders in historical research.

You will have the opportunity to give your career the edge by studying abroad in either the USA or Europe. You will learn how history is applied in the real world by studying a unique module entitled ‘Your Graduate Future’, which allows you to apply your skills to the voluntary and public sectors, or the business world, and to take part in a work placement.

This History degree cultivates a range of personal and practical skills that are widely applicable and highly valued by employers.

Our History course helped prepare recent graduates for successful careers in research, journalism, local government, teaching, the civil service, heritage management, the Armed Forces and politics.
