The History MA course at Northumbria University is a dynamic and flexible course which is tailored to the interests of students, allowing you to design a programme that reflects your preferred areas of study.

You will be able to choose from a number of different strands as part of the flexibility of the History course. Options include American History, British History, European History and Early Modern History.

This postgraduate History degree programme consists primarily of broad, thematic taught modules spanning the middle ages to the present day. Within the course structure, there are three core modules and two optional modules. You will complete the three core modules in Historical Contexts, Digital History and Dissertation Preparation, as well as the final dissertation project. In addition, you will have the opportunity to study two optional modules, chosen from a range of topics such as War and Peace in Historical Perspective and The British Empire.

As part of this History Masters' degree, you will conduct independent research under the supervision of a subject specialist, in relation to your chosen historical strand. Throughout your studies you will benefit from working with our academics who were recently ranked in the UK’s top 20 for the quality of their history publications, as part of REF 2014.

Did you know?

The MA in History can be studied at Northumbria’s Newcastle Campus or completely online, allowing students with busy schedules to complete the course with the same level of support as students on campus. The course has an innovative online learning environment allowing you to listen to podcasts of lectures, interact with other students in discussion forums, complete dynamic assessments, and have face-to-face meetings with your supervisor.

The course will help to develop a wide range of skills that are highly desirable in today’s competitive job market such as written and oral communication and the design, management and completion of projects.

Students will gain expert knowledge of research by collecting, sifting and organising historical data, and, on completion, you will be able to use state-of-the-art digital researching tools.

Application Process
In the personal statement section of the application form, please indicate which of the following four strands you would like to pursue: British History, American History, European History, Early Modern History. You should also give an indication of what broadly conceived topic you would like to work on for your dissertation, so we can match you up with a potential supervisor.
