Students wishing to develop their historical research skills will enjoy this research-intensive course.

The MRes History will give you access to widely-published academics who were recently ranked in the UK’s top 20 for the quality of their history publications (REF 2014).

With their support, you will define and shape your own research area and learning methods will shift from group seminars and colloquia to intensive, individual one-to-one tutorials with an expert supervisor. The Department also has a number of exciting research groups, many of which are interdisciplinary in method and scope.

The MRes course will furnish you with professional skills including communication, self- management, planning and ethical awareness, in line with the UK Research Council’s training requirements for research students.

The centrepiece of the MRes is a Dissertation research project: a specialist, in-depth study based upon a significant research question and underpinned by substantial sources. You will be supported by a framework of modules including Historical Contexts, Digital History and Dissertation Preparation, and Research Development offering training in research skills and exploring critical and theoretical practices crucial to research.

Historical Contexts addresses the intellectual contexts for research in History and explores a variety of historical approaches and materials. Digital History will equip you with the core skills required for historical and literary research, fostering the development of a more specialised approach to your chosen area of research. Meanwhile, Research Development enables you to develop a precise research question, topic and plan which will form the basis of your dissertation project. You will also have the opportunity to organise your own one-day research conference.

Did you know?

The History section of the Department of Humanities comprises both American Studies and History. Drawing upon the expertise of our staff, the Department promotes quality, diversity and innovation in research and teaching across all areas of its provision.

The Department of Humanities is one of the largest departments in the University, with a thriving and active academic community. Northumbria also boasts one of the largest concentrations of Americanist scholars in the UK. Staff are actively involved in research, often through funded projects and awards, participating in a diverse range of research groups within the Department. Several staff members are also engaged in collaborative research projects, many of which are part of national or international research networks.

The MRes course was a fantastic opportunity to get a taste of being an academic researcher. It allowed me to follow my research interests and successfully apply for a PhD course afterwards!
