What will I learn on this module?

Following the exploration of key theoretical perspectives on housing, space and society you will learn about how ideological, economic and social influences shape the production and reproduction of the residential built environment. You will analyse how and why tenure structure in the United Kingdom has changed over time. You will critically review and evaluate the impact of housing policies in determining spatial and residential outcomes. To support this you will study the following topics:

• The role of location and space in housing
• The contested meaning of house and home
• Housing policy, the development of the residential built environment and socio-geographical phenomena
• Changing tenure structures
o Market housing – owner occupation and the private rented sector
o Social housing – council housing and housing associations
• Disadvantaged neighbourhoods
• Inter and intra-regional housing market trends
• Housing affordability and social exclusion
• Housing policy and the impact on social groups
• Housing and contemporary policy issues.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, seminars, workshops, guest speakers and local field study visits. Your directed study will be facilitated through your engagement with a range of supporting learning materials, guided by the e-reading list. This will enable you to consolidate your knowledge and understanding.

Lectures will be used to introduce you to and develop key theories, concepts and policies. This learning will be further developed through your involvement in smaller group discussions in seminars and workshops. Field study visits and guest speakers from the housing profession will then allow you to engage in the appliation of your learning to the real world.

Timely formative feedback, from tutors and peers, throughout your interactions with the learning process will strengthen your understanding in preparation for the completion of the assesssments for this module.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Academic support for your learning will take place both within the formal teaching environment and outside of it. Within the scheduled teaching tutor and peer feedback will occur during discussions in the interactive, question driven lectures and workshops. This exposure to discussion and debates around the key concepts will develop and test your understanding. This understanding will then be applied to the assessments for the module.

The scheduled study visits allow you to apply your understanding to local residential areas further testing your understanding within the context of application to the real world.

The eLP provides you with immediate access to learning materials, links and signposts to additional materials and, via the discussion board, opportunities for you to post questions to your tutors and peers.

Teaching staff operate an ‘open door’ policy for students meaning you can approach them anytime during normal office hours, or via email, to answer questions, receive feedback and support your learning on the module.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• MLO1: You will critically discuss the different theories and interpretations of housing phenomena.
• MLO2: You will critically evaluate the role of housing and the housing system in the creation of the residential built environment.
• MLO3: You will critically analyse the relationship between housing and residential, spatial outcomes for different groups.

How will I be assessed?

Formative feedback: interactive workshops, visits and guest speakers will provide opportunities to test your learning. Through debate and discussion there will be opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors allowing you to reflect on your knowledge and understanding prior to the summative assessments.

Summative assessment: This module has two components of assessment.

Component one, a project, requires you, through the selection of a local area, to apply theoretical perspectives to understand the development of a specific residential environment. This is worth 40% of the module assessment and tests MLO1, MLO2, MLO4 and MLO5.

Component two, a seen examination, tests your understanding of the relationship between housing phenomena and the residential, spatial outcomes that result. This is worth 60% of the module assessment and tests MLO1, MLO3, MLO4 and MLO5.

Module abstract

This module aims to develop your understanding of the key theoretical concepts that underpin the residential built environment. You will explore how ideological, economic and social influences shape the production and reproduction of the residential built environment and determine spatial outcomes. Learning is delivered through lectures, workshops, visits and guest speakers. This provides you with a contextual framework from which you can critically analyse the evolution of the housing system in the United Kingdom and the socio spatial outcomes that have resulted. Assessment is by a project and seen examination that are supported by programme and module specific approaches to research rich learning. This module will assist in the development of skills that will support your transition into employment. Specifically the module will, through the learning and assessment strategies, develop skills of team working; self-management; the ability to think independently; and communicate effectively in an appropriate manner.
