What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will explore the key concepts of social exclusion, sustainable communities, partnership working and community empowerment. These key concepts provide an analytical framework within which you can evaluate policies and initiatives, both historical and contemporary, aimed at regenerating and renewing disadvantaged neighbourhoods. You will learn why neighbourhoods become disadvantaged and how approaches to addressing these issues differ temporally, spatially and ideologically.

How will I learn on this module?

On this module you will learn through interactive lectures and workshops. Lectures will deliver knowledge core to the syllabus and will allow for group interaction through work tasks and open discussion. Workshops will focus on addressing key questions allowing you to further develop your analytical understanding of the key concepts. You will be expected to undertake considerable independent research to support your contribution to workshops. Guest speakers and field visits will allow you to experience first-hand historical and contemporary approaches to tackling disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Formative feedback, as the result of group work, discussion topics and guest speakers, will, throughout the module, will help you consolidate your learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Academic support for your learning will take place both within the formal teaching environment and outside of it. Within the scheduled teaching tutor and peer feedback will occur during discussions in the interactive, question driven lectures and workshops. This exposure to discussion and debates around the key concepts will develop and test your understanding. This understanding will then be applied to the assessments for the module. The eLP provides you with immediate access to learning materials, links and signposts to additional materials and, via the discussion board, opportunities for you to post questions to your tutors and peers. Teaching staff operate an ‘open door’ policy for students meaning you can approach them anytime during normal office hours, or via email, to answer questions, receive feedback and support your learning on the module.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• MLO1: Critically analyse key concepts relating to the renewal of disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
• MLO2: Critical evaluation of the different temporal, spatial and ideological influences on the renewal of disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
• MLO3: Critically evaluate theoretical frameworks and apply them to practice.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
• MLO4: Reflect on the ethics and sustainability of renewal and regeneration policies and practices.

How will I be assessed?

Formative feedback: interactive workshops, visits and guest speakers will provide opportunities to test your learning. Through debate and discussion there will be opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors allowing you to reflect on your knowledge and understanding prior to the summative assessments.

Summative assessment: This module is assessed by two pieces of coursework.

Coursework one, an essay, requires you to draw upon relevant literature to critically analyse the potential and constraints of different approaches to regeneration within the particular context of disadvantaged neighbourhoods, inequality, social exclusion and sustainable communities. It has a value of 50% and will test MLO1, MLO2, MLO3 and MLO4.

Coursework two, a report, requires you to draw upon research relating to community empowerment and neighbourhood renewal in order to critically review the impact of policies and practices. It has a value of 50% and will test MLO1, MLO2, MLO3 and MLO4.

Module abstract

This module aims to develop your understanding of the renewal of disadvantaged neighbourhoods through the exploration of key concepts: social exclusion and inequality; sustainable communities; partnership working; and community empowerment. These key concepts provide a theoretical framework for the evaluation of policies and initiatives aimed at renewing neighbourhoods. Learning is delivered through interactive lectures, workshops, visits and guest speakers. This approach provides you with a contextual framework from which you can critically evaluate approaches to neighbourhood renewal that have varied temporally, spatially and ideologically. Assessment is through two pieces of coursework that are supported by programme and module specific approaches to research rich learning. This module will assist in the development of skills that will support your transition into employment. Specifically the module will, through the learning and assessment strategies, develop skills of team working; self-management; the ability to think independently; and communicate effectively in an appropriate manner.
