What will I learn on this module?

One of the key principles underpinning the postgraduate provision in NBS is that of reflective practice. ‘Developing Self as HR Leader’ puts you at the centre of the learning process, facilitating the development of independent learning and critical thinking skills via reflective practice. The module also assists you in evidencing how you meet professional body requirements in terms of professional competence standards.

The module is one year in duration. During Semester 1 you will be introduced to the concepts of self-awareness and continuous self-development, and personal and professional processes and practices that will inform and sustain your current and future practice as colleagues, managers and HR leaders. Topics include:

• Self-awareness and self-development
• Giving and receiving feedback
• Culutural and emotional intelligence
• Perceptions and values
• Personality and identity
• Developing managerial and leadership skills
• Working in groups and teams
• Learning and reflective practice

In Semester 2, the second half of the module aims to deliver an opportunity for you to develop a range of practical skills determined by your own professional development priorities for your individual professional practice in HRM&D. Learning will occur by engaging in reflective practice through critical reflection and reflexivity. As a result of attending the module, you will have experienced (and hopefully learned something about) networking, team working, giving feedback, influencing, presenting and negotiating as well as the particular skill that you set out to develop in the first place, so help you demonstrate an essential people management skill set.

How will I learn on this module?

Throughout this module you will be attending weekly two hour lectures which are a mixture of tutor-led inputs and student-led interactive tasks and discussions. These interactive tasks include discussion of diagnostic tests and tool-kits, HR case studies and group presentations. A residential experiential learning event will be a complementary but additional support activity, providing you with opportunities to interact through group-based activities with your peers on the programme. The residential also directly supports you in the achievement of your postgraduate goals. The activities undertaken provide evidence of developing self-awareness, and it is this evidence which supports the first summative assessment of this module.

During Semester 2, learning is based on a process of ‘emergent learning’ and it can be both powerful and enjoyable. Critical reflection of own practice and reflexivity will be a key method of learning. You will also learn from each other’s knowledge, experience and reflections. This will facilitate co-constructive learning. During the 2nd semester, you will ’network’ and form yourselves into suitable learning sets. These learning sets will select one of the key skills and research the theory and techniques that support this particular skill. Throughout Semester 2 you will also practice this skill in the workplace, reporting your individual progress in the development of your skill(s) to the rest of the students in the cohort. You will consolidate your learning in the form of an interactive 60-minute presentation, which you will design in your individual learning set and deliver to students in your cohort. Your presentation will facilitate the development of your chosen skill and you will receive feedback on the effectiveness in achieving this from your peers and tutors. This presentation will be assessed using the assessment criteria developed by the cohort of students. This process will help you develop your problem solving skills and so make sound and justifiable decisions and solve problems more effectively.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module delivers a mixture of student self-managed learning and tutor input and support. It creates opportunities and experiences from which you can develop and improve an essential people management skill set.

You will have access to support and guidance from the Module Tutor and an additional member of staff within the HR subject group during the weekly two hour lecture, including provision of formative feedback. Tutor input will be provided as appropriate based on:- understanding learning processes, working in teams, assessment and developing assessment criteria, and personal reflection and reflective report writing. Tutors act as process consultants during the 2nd semester.

The module is supported by a teaching and learning plan which outlines the formal sessions, together with the tutor-directed study and independent reading. An interactive approach to the learning sessions will draw upon the directed learning undertaken and participants’ own experiences. Throughout, the emphasis will be on high levels of participant participation, both individually and within small learning sets or teams. You can therefore expect the reflective-practitioner approach to learning to be embedded in all the lecture sessions through undertaking activities which facilitate you to apply theory to ‘real-life’ situations, critically analysing and making recommendations for appropriate ways forward for the organization/individual. Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading, preparation for interactive activities and use of the discussion board on the e-learning platform. Independent learning will centre upon the participants identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to the subject area or by providing deeper/broader knowledge and understanding of the subject through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, reflection, research etc. Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Intellectual/Professional skills & abilities:
• To develop of skills required of effective HR practitioners including in an international context and those outlined by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). (MLO1)

• To develop the skills required to work effectively in groups. (MLO2)

Personal Values Attributes:
• To engage with continuing self-development and reflective practice to identify personal strengths and weaknesses. You will be expected to critically reflect on knowledge, experience and practice. (MLO3)

• To engage with career planning and establishing goals for future development. (MLO4)

How will I be assessed?

The summative assessments comprise of three components. Component one is due for submission at the end of semester 1 and component 2 and 3 are due in semester 2

You will submit an individual assignment at the end of Semester 1 equating to 50% of your module mark. In no more than 3,000 words you are required to demonstrate critical understanding of theoretical perspectives and your ability to apply these in order to understand your individual behaviour and practices (MLO1, MLO2, MLO3, MLO4). The assignment includes the identification of continuing personal and professional development needs (MLO3, MLO4).

The two remaining summative assignment will be due at the end of Semester 2. Part two is a 2000 - 3000 word reflective learning portfolio covering a self-assessment of current skill level of each of the key skills, and a reflective account of progress in other skill development over the course of the module delivery (MLO1, MLO2, MLO3, MLO4). This will require you to be aware of the underpinning theory supporting reflective learning, self-assessment and supporting evidence and to demonstrate a practical understanding of their progress towards developing a range of HR practitioner skills. This element will comprise 30% of the overall module mark.
Finally, part three comprises a group presentation (MLO2) done during the later weeks of the module in semester two, in which student learning sets - working as a team - will apply their learning to inform and educate their fellow students (MLO3). This will require them to be aware of the underpinning theory and techniques appropriate to their development of their key skill. Except in exceptional circumstances, each member of the learning set will receive the same mark for the presentation delivered. This will be worth 20% of the overall module mark.

Assessment criteria will be provided to enable you to understand what is expected of you and how you will be judged on your performance. Students will be provided with feedback on their assignment as part of their ongoing reflective learning and CPPD.
Feedback on your summative performance in this module will be provided as follows: Your assessment will be returned to you with annotated comments directly related to the assessment task. You will also be provided with a written comment on actions to be taken to improve performance in assessment overall.
This University, and the School, is constantly seeking to improve its feedback to students and will pilot new initiatives on a regular basis. When such pilots involve a deviation from above, students on modules affected will be fully advised of the revised feedback approach.
Feedback on your learning set presentations will be given by the tutors and by other students immediately after the presentation.

Formative assessment will take place through group work, assignment discussion and reflection, discussion board activity on the e-learning platform, case study activity, and theory/practice related discussions. Criteria will be provided to enable you to understand what is expected of you and how you will be assessed on your performance. You are required to demonstrate self-reflection and reflective practice where appropriate (MLO3). Formative assessment will also take place through learning set discussion about progress with module tutors. Formative feedback will be provided throughout the module, particularly in relation to activities carried out in groups. Students should, however be aware that formative feedback can, and will, occur in any communication with an academic tutor.

You will be encouraged throughout the module to practice the key (and other) skills in your workplace and to complete individual reflective notes or reports on the learning that practice achieved. Along with the learning and teaching plan, which will include guidance on the objectives to be achieved, this will allow students to monitor their own progress.

‘Developing Self as HR Leader’ provides you with valuable opportunities to engage with continuous self-development and the development of a range of practical skills essential to professional practice in Human Resource Management and Development.

This module incorporates a range of delivery methods to support your learning, including HR skill-development sessions, and a weekend residential. While semester 1 will familiarise you with Leadership and Management theories and concepts relevant to the HR practitioner, Semester 2 is focused on the development of specific HR skills via a process of ‘emergent learning’ and it can be both very powerful and enjoyable. You will ‘network’ and form yourselves into suitable learning sets. In your learning sets, you will research the theory and techniques that support one of the particular key skills and practice you wish to develop.

The summative assessment for this module combines both individual coursework and group assessment. There are three summative assessments in this module. You will submit component one of the summative assessments, which is a 3000 word assignment at the end of semester 1. This is worth 50% of the overall module mark. The two remaining summative assessments will be due for submission at the end of semester 2. Assessment component two is a 2000-3000 word reflective learning portfolio worth 30% of the overall module mark. Component three comprises of a group presentation that is worth 20% of the overall module mark.
