What will I learn on this module?

Your learning activities on this module focus on the integration and development of a strategic approach to the attraction, retention and development of staff, analysing their key employment markets and gaining an understanding of their dynamics so as to enable companies to compete more effectively, both now and in the future. You will learn how the HR function plays a central role at every stage of the employee life-cycle, for example, recruitment and selection including employer branding, employee turnover and retention, learning and development, talent management all within a global context, both at strategic and operational levels. The module will also assist you in developing a critical understanding of the potential and limitations of the contribution of learning and talent development policies and strategies to formulating and achieving objectives at national, organisational, group and individual levels and will enable the development of intellectual, social, professional and personal skills to perform effectively in associated professional roles.

How will I learn on this module?

You will be provided with a teaching and learning plan which outlines the topics of the formal sessions, together with the tutor-directed study and independent reading. An interactive approach to lecture sessions will draw upon the directed learning undertaken and your own experiences. Throughout, the emphasis will be on high levels of participation, both individually and within small groups or teams. Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading and preparation for the interactive activities. Independent learning will centre upon you identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to the subject area or by providing deeper/broader knowledge and understanding of the subject through a range of learning activities that might include extended reading, reflection, research etc. Critical reflection on knowledge, experience and practice underpins the learning and teaching philosophy along with the explicit development of competence.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module is supported by an e-learning portal, which houses a variety of electronic support facilities such as lecture and seminar materials, assessment details, videos, recordings of certain lectures and a wide-ranging electronic reading list including RSS feeds that showcase the application of various practices presented in the module. Formative assessment will take place through group work, assignment discussion and reflection, case study activity, and theory/practice related discussions. Criteria will be provided to enable you to understand what is expected and how you will be assessed. You will be required to demonstrate self-reflection and reflective practice where appropriate. You should, however be aware that formative feedback can, and will, occur in any communication with an academic tutor. This University, and the School, is constantly seeking to improve its feedback to students and will pilot new initiatives on a regular basis. When such pilots involve a deviation from above, students on modules affected will be fully advised of the revised feedback approach.

• Analyse and evaluate the major features of national and international employment markets from which organisations source staff and ways in which these markets evolve or change.(MLO 1)
• Critically analyse and evaluate the formulation and implementation of processes of learning and talent development strategies for defining and achieving current and future effectiveness at national, organisational, group and individual levels.(MLO 2)
• Analyse and evaluate the major features of national and international employment markets from which organisations source staff and ways in which these markets evolve or change.(MLO3)

• Reflect critically on theory and practice in talent management and development from a professional standpoint (ML04)

How will I be assessed?

Summative assessment and rationale for tasks
Summative assessment (MLO 1, 2, 3, 4,5) comprises a practical assignment in which students will apply their learning to demonstrate critical analysis, applying current theoretical and applied perspectives in HRM/D to practice related issues and put forward reasoned recommendations to improve and enhance current organisational practice, when appropriate in the form of a 3,000-word assignment (50%). In addition, a 2 hour closed book examination (50%) will complete the assessment mechanism for the module.(MLO 1, 2, 3)
Additional formative assessment – details of process and rationale
Formative assessment will take place through group work, assignment discussion and reflection, case study activity, and theory/practice related discussions. Criteria will be provided to enable participants to understand what is expected of them and how they will be assessed on their performance. Participants are required to demonstrate self-reflection and reflective practice where appropriate.(MLO3).

Module abstract

To mobilise an effective workforce, organisations hire people from employment markets which oblige them to compete for talent with other employers whenever demand for skills is greater than the available supply. Effective organisations thus develop a strategic approach to the attraction and retention of staff, analysing their key employment markets and gaining an understanding of the market’s dynamics so as to enable them to compete more effectively, both now and in the future. This module will help you to develop a critical understanding of both the potential, and the limitations, of the contribution of learning and talent development policies and strategies which contribute to formulating and achieving objectives at national, organisational, group and individual levels.
