What will I learn on this module?

The module content is centred on student learning and development. It seeks to help you become more effective, independent and confident self-directed learners by improving your capacity to understand what you have learned, how and when you are learning, and to encourage you to monitor, reflect on, evaluate, plan and take responsibility for your own learning. In particular, the module aims to:
· develop good practice in the preparation for a career in IS/IT and business or Communications and Public Relations, both on placement and after graduating. It will include enhancement of job application, interview and presentation skills as well as CV development
· improve written and oral communication skills, including negotiation and persuasion
· introduce the student to the principles of continuous professional development and the professional bodies and codes to support this, including legal and ethical issues
· develop self and peer-assessment capabilities by involving students in the interviewing process as both interviewer and interviewee.
You will produce an e-portfolio of their best work showcasing your skills and abilities, which can be shared with prospective employers. This will also enable you to record their personal objectives and evaluate your progress towards the achievement of these objectives, thus continuously developing your career plans. This portfolio will be summatively assessed, as well as being used to give formative feedback. By using reflective practice to understand how you are learning and how to prove what you have learned, and recording this in the portfolio, you will be able to relate your skills and capabilities to employer requirements.
You will also be given practice in presenting yourself to a prospective employer, and in participating in the interviewing process.

· Creation and maintenance of one or more e-portfolios for academic and/or job-seeking purposes
· Career development and job application skills: eg CV development, job search strategies, job application, interview preparation and technique, negotiation and persuasion Professional Issues
· Introduction to the role of the IT professional from the perspective of the organisation, including information, knowledge and expertise as organisational assets; information and knowledge management, security and privacy.
· Origins, development and roles of professional bodies (BCS, UKAIS, CIPR, etc)

Professional codes and ethical and legal considerations of the relevant industry.

How will I learn on this module?

This module will be delivered using a combination of lectures and practical seminars, role-play and discussions and independent study to supplement the taught sessions will be supported by resources available on the e-learning portal site.

You will also be required to produce a 'showcase' portfolio for assessment and job application purposes, and it will also reflect evidence of your awareness of the relevant legal, ethical and professional issues. This e-portfolio will be shared with tutors from the beginning, so that formative feedback can be given whenever appropriate and student progress monitored.

Students will be given the opportunity to have a mock job interview, and receive formative feedback on this and to participate in the interviewing process by acting as observers on the interview panel, which will, where possible, include employers.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be given both written and verbal feedback and guidance on your work and progress during the semester by your tutor. In addition, the eLP (electronic learning portal module) blackboard is used to provide extensive support materials.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1 You will be able to assemble and maintain an eportfolio of documentation and evidence relating to your employability (application forms, CVs, covering letters etc).
MLO2 You will be able to develop presentations to professional standards, adopting a professional manner and appearance in interview situations
MLO3 You will be able to analyse and assess the social, legal, professional and ethical aspects of your preferred career area of interest.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

MLO4 You will be able to use self and peer assessment techniques to evaluate your own work and the work of others in order to appraise and improve your own employability skills and gain an understanding of employer needs.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
MLO5 You will be able to choose appropriate reflective practice to understand and demonstrate your learning, with particular emphasis on how this relates to employer interests and informs the development and achievement of your career plans and personal objectives.

How will I be assessed?

The module will be assessed by a summative ePortfolio containing evidence of skills, achievements, self-evaluation and self-assessment, with clearly thought-out personal development planning for your chosen career.

In addition, your portfolio will evidence a clear understanding of the legal, ethical and professional issues, that are relevant to the area, underpinned by a secure research base.

A taxonomy developed for the assessment of PDP/ePortfolios will be used for summative assessment feedback purposes.
Formative assessment - specific feedback on interview and associated paperwork to support placement application; advice and guidance on progress of personal and professional development planning. This will be given verbally and/or via the ePortfolio.

Students will be given formative feedback on their application paperwork at or just after their practice interview. The ePortfolio will cover all the MLOs
(MLO1, MLO2, MLO3, MLO4, MLO5)
