What will I learn on this module?

This module will extend your knowledge and proficiency in UML-based analysis & design and object-oriented software development, which includes programmed access to databases managed by other software systems. You will explore issues of component based software designs that arise in the development of interactive programs that incorporate a graphical user interface linking different software applications and at the same time to consider HCI issues.
You will go through the stages of system analysis and design using UML notation and diagrams (e.g., use-case diagrams, use-case descriptions, activity diagrams, communication diagrams, etc) and software development using a suitable object-oriented programming language.

How will I learn on this module?

You will attend lab-based workshops, which includes interactive lectures to introduce key concepts and ideas then followed by hands-on lab sessions whereby you will develop analysis and design models using a UML tool and carry out implementation of your design models in a suitable programming language.

If you are studying a Degree Apprenticeship you will also learn at work, from reflecting on your experiences and applying your knowledge from the module to your practice in the workplace. The classes will introduce you to theories and concepts and allow you to discuss with the tutors and your peers how these relate to your own work based experiences and practice. The workplace provides an opportunity for you to put your own knowledge and skills into practice and review your learning with your manager/mentor. The standard delivery is Newcastle Campus class room based, however if your employer has a contract with the university that indicates you may study remotely then you will be able to attend the classes virtually. In this case, you will follow lectures via webcasts and attend online seminars / workshops. The use of Blackboard collaborate (or similar) will be employed to enable this. Normally the delivery of this module focuses upon one programming language. You are normally expected to complete the second assessed task using this language. However if in your workplace you make use of a comparable programming language subject to negotiation with the module teaching team you may complete the assessments using that programming language.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be given advice and feedback on your formative assessment (e.g., lab exercises) during the timetabled classes. In addition, the eLP module instance will be used to provide extensive supporting material. Constructive and written feedback on first summative assessment will provide you focused guidance on how to improve your work in the following summative assessment. Specific sessions will provide you with further directed guidance on successful completion of your summative assessments.

If you are studying for a Degree Apprenticeship additional support will be available from your work place mentor who will encourage you to reflect upon how you work and studies interact and complement one another.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:

MLO1 You will be able to gather, analyse and specify software requirements and carry out system analysis and design.
MLO2 You will be able to implement and test a software application to meet the system specifications.


Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

MLO3 You will be able to produce analysis and design models to represent structural and behavioural aspects, user interface and database that support the system's functionality using appropriate tools & methods (e.g., UML).

MLO4 You will be able to work effectively as part of a team in a software project, take a set of UML models and implement & test a system using an appropriate programming language (e.g., Java, C#).


Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

MLO5 You will be able to understand and appraise the complexity of software development.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment: lab exercises carried out within workshops will build up to form a basis of the two summative assessments. Feedback will be given during lab sessions.


Summative assessment: two written assignments involving team/group work and individual components.

• The 1st coursework assessment will comprise analysis and design exercises of an information system (40%) and will test MLOs 1 and 3.

• The 2nd coursework assessment will comprise of a system implementation and testing (60%), which will test MLOs 2, 4 and 5.

Feedback: You will be given detailed feedback on the 1st group assignment clearly identifying both the weaknesses and strong points of the work. As this will be set approximately half-way through the module it will enable the students to identify those areas where they need to focus their efforts on in their 2nd group assignment.

The weighting of individual and group work in both assignments is 50% group work and 50% individual work. Robust and auditable peer assessment mechanisms are used to ensure an equitable set of marks are awarded to individual students based upon their contribution to the group tasks.

Normally the delivery of this module focuses upon one programming language. You are normally expected to complete the 2nd assessed tasks using this language. If you are studying a Degree Apprenticeship and in your workplace you make use of a comparable programming language subject to negotiation with the module teaching team you may complete the second assessment using that programming language
