This module aims to prepare you for creating self-initiated briefs, to turn these into functional prototypes and to document them in a professional manner.

You can expect to be taught through lectures, individual tutorial, group tutorial, and presentations. You will receive feedback in one to one tutorial sessions, and at interim and final presentations.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported through in-class tutorials with the tutors, as well as through individual meetings with the tutors.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• Demonstrate a requisite and sound understanding of the main body of knowledge for IxD as well as undertaking research, with an ability to exercise critical and analytical judgment across a range of issues. KU3

• Show evidence of experimental and/or innovative thinking in the resolution of an interaction design problem or issue. IP1
• Demonstrate the ability to generate ideas independently in response to a self-initiated activity. IP4

• Demonstrate transferable skills and an ability to demonstrate organised work as an individual with minimum guidance PV2

How will I be assessed?

For this module the requirements to pass are that you deliver the following:
1. A Design Document outlining the research leading to the development of your Personal Project Mock-up Prototype OR a Dissertation paper that covers a topic related to your chosen technology for your Prototype.
2. In-class presentations of your project at midterm and at the end of term.

The marking criteria are as follows:
1. You have demonstrated the ability to plan, organise and manage effective research and development in order to acquire new practical or professional knowledge of a self-determined or selected project
2. You have applied critical analysis in the evaluation of research evidence or material related to interaction design.
3. You have Intellectually engaged with a range of research material, techniques and analytical tools for the purpose of appraisal, evaluation or prediction.

You will receive feedback in one to one and/or group tutorial sessions, and at interim and final presentations. Formative assessment will be provided through tutorials or formal presentations. Summative assessment will be carried out through presentations, and Design Documents or Dissertations.

Module abstract

In combination with Personal Project (Realisation and Presentation) this module allows you to self-generate a brief on a chosen area of technological specialisation. In this module you will be expected to create a Design Document that reflects on your chosen mock-up prototype OR to write a Dissertation on an area related to your Prototype technology. You will research and prototype cutting edge technology in an area to be agreed with the tutors and from its findings generate three concepts which could potentially enhance the existing technology and extend the boundaries of currently available technology. Assessment will be by a Design Document or a Dissertation.
