What will I learn on this module?

In this module you will be provided with the opportunity to develop knowledge, competencies and skills in resource management and planning in an international context. The module will focus on human resource management and financial management (specifically accounting and financial analysis) applicable to international sport organisations. Both aspects will include the theoretical background to managing people and finance alongside practical application using international sport organisation examples.

How will I learn on this module?

You will experience a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, which will be supplemented with independent study tasks through the provision of reading and case studies. Tasks will be undertaken and then reviewed in the following session. These sessions are supported by the Electronic Learning Platform (eLP) where you can review key ideas from lectures and seminars. Together, the combination of independent study tasks and taught sessions will help you develop conceptual knowledge of international resource management and its application. This application is further developed with a visit to a sports organisation to link theory with practice.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Module tutors will use online resources and the eLP to provide support materials. Constructive feedback will be provided by peers and tutors in seminar sessions to develop conceptual knowledge. Group and individual tutorials will allow students to discuss their assessment ideas with staff and obtain feedback. Prior to summative assessments module staff will deliver an assessment briefing session. After assessment one, feed-forward will be provided by staff to assist with assessment two.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
1. You will demonstrate a critical understanding of resource management and planning in international sport organisations.
2. You will synthesise and apply concepts and factors impacting upon financial management within an international sport organisation.

3. You will analyse a set of financial accounts using appropriate tools and techniques.

4. You will identify and analyse concepts and external factors impacting upon human resource practices.

How will I be assessed?

Formative assessment: You will be given the opportunity to do a formative writing task and receive feedback and feed-forward on the work submitted. This will support you in doing assessment one. You will be encouraged to engage in classroom activities to ensure you understand the theoretical underpinning. Tutorial support will be available for written assignments to discuss the proposed structure, content and references.
Summative assessment 1: written assignment of 2500 words. An essay incorporating the critical appreciation of human resource management concepts and ideas, and the factors that impact upon these in international sport organisations. (50%) MLO 1 & 4. Electronic feedback on the script in relation to the marking criteria and additional feed-forward comments on the overall performance.
Summative assessment 2: report of 2500 words. The report requires students to apply the concepts of financial management to examples from the international sport management industry. (50%) MLO 2 & 3.

Module abstract

Managing people and finances is the key to successful international sport organisations. ‘International Resource Management for Sport’ allows you to develop your knowledge, skills and competencies in these two key facets of management by focusing both the teaching and the assessment to specific resource issues in sport organisations. You will be considering recent and relevant research articles to supplement practical application which will enhance your employability. Finally, you will benefit from the international context of this module in terms of content, examples and the experiences of your fellow-students.
