About this course 2018/19

The luxury industry, which covers everything from cars to designer labels, and from cosmetics to jewellery, is predicted to grow substantially in the years ahead. Tens of thousands of new jobs will be created by brands that aspire to top quality, superior design and aesthetic excellence. On a global perspective the luxury market, building on the success of renowned brands like Aston Martin, Burberry, Chanel, Rolex and Prada, is worth hundreds of billions of pounds and is expected to grow.

Northumbria University offers one of the few master’s degrees to explicitly focus on the luxury industry, giving our students an edge when it comes to employability. We’ll develop your awareness of the specific issues involved in the industry alongside broader principles of enterprise and leadership. You’ll gain an understanding of the production, distribution and strategic positioning of luxury goods. You’ll also work on concepts and platforms such as brand management, marketing and social media.

By the end of the course, which includes a live project, you’ll be equipped for both creative and management roles throughout the luxury goods industry.

Learn from the best

This course leverages the expertise of the Northumbria School of Design, which was named as one of Europe’s top design schools by US Business Week magazine, and which has an international reputation for innovation and creativity.

All staff have a strong commitment to developing your skills and knowledge by developing your critical thinking and your ability to apply your skills to complex real-world problems. They will be there to support you through every step of your course, ensuring you leave Northumbria with confidence and a thorough understanding.

Teaching and Assessment

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars and workshops. As this is a master’s course there is a major element of independent learning and self-motivated reflection.

Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that helps ensure a successful learning journey. We make sure that extensive feedback, from both tutors and peers, is built into the course.

Our assessment strategy is based on our understanding that everyone has different needs, strengths and enthusiasms. Assessment is based on course work and our methods will include essays, case study reports, presentations, and the master’s dissertation.

Learning Environment

This course is delivered at the Northumbria School of Design, an outstanding learning space that is located at City Campus East.

Throughout the course you’ll have access to state-of-the-art facilities such as our University library – which is ranked in the top three in the UK – and well-equipped working space, The Hub, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Your learning experience will be enhanced through the use of technology. Learning materials, including module guides, lecture slides and reading lists, will be available via our innovative e-learning platform, Blackboard. You’ll also be able to access student support and other University systems through your personal account.

Research-rich Learning

Our learning and teaching philosophy promotes independent and critical thinking. Research-rich learning is built into the learning environment, which is both challenging and supportive. The dissertation module provides an opportunity for you to design, execute and write up an original piece of research on a topic that you’ll negotiate with your supervisor.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Northumbria School of Design. With research seminars and events regularly taking place, and with staff discussing their own research as it relates to the topics you’ll study, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging in up-to-date enquiry-based learning.

Give your career an edge

All modules embed brand management skills and develop real-world competencies. In particular the ‘live project’ module will allow you to develop practical applications to complex and unpredictable problems. The project will involve the fulfilment of a brief from a luxury brand company: for example you might research a brand’s current range, carry out research to identify a gap, and then create a strategy to fill the gap by introducing a new product or service.

Your Future

With creative knowledge of luxury brand products, and key management and marketing competencies, you’ll be ready for national and international opportunities in the luxury goods industry.

If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

The course could also lead you to a postgraduate research degree such as an MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University. These include the ability to tackle complex issues through conceptualisation and undertaking research, the ability to contribute to new processes and knowledge, and the ability to formulate balanced judgements when considering incomplete or ambiguous data.
