Academic’s Design Innovation Helps Business Increase Turnover By £1 million

A Northumbria School of Design academic is playing a vital role in helping businesses to stay competitive and increase their turnover.

Dr Stuart English, programme lead for our Design Management MA, has led research on Multiple Perspective Problem Framing (MPPF) – a process which involves exploring a business problem or situation from several different perspectives and using design led thinking to identify creative, yet commercial, solutions.

MPFF: establishing competitive advantage

To date, MPPF has been used by more than 50 companies in a wide range of sectors – from original equipment manufacturers in consumer electronics, to technology companies operating in fields such as satellite GPS, renewable energy, printable electronics and advanced chemicals.

The organisations have all used it to help develop new commercially viable products and manufacturing processes, establishing a competitive advantage in their respective markets.

 Eve Products: a case-study

Eve Products Ltd is one company that has benefited from Dr English’s design-led innovation approach. Based in Skipton, it manufactures banners for the exhibition industry, selling them globally.

The team’s application of MPPF process allowed them to identify problems in their industry and transform them into commercial opportunities. They introduced five new product ranges, each aimed at solving a challenge within their sector.

The project was a success: Eve Products doubled their workforce in five years, increased their turnover by nearly 200 per cent and now holds a unique proposition in the market.

Stuart Sapsford, Eve Product Ltd’s Managing Director, confirms the impact using MPPF has achieved:

“Through the application of Dr English’s Multiple Perspective Problem Framing methods, we have generated new innovations and new intellectual property that is now used in 80 per cent of our products. These innovations give us a significant advantage over our competitors and, as a result, our annual turnover has increased by more than £1 million.”
