Meet Your Design Management Academic Team

Meet some of the experienced and knowledgeable team of academic staff behind our Design Management MA.

Dr Stuart English

Dr Stuart English is the course lead on our Design Management MA. He has been a member of faculty for almost 30 years, specialising in design thinking and design driven innovation. He has been an ardent advocate for distance learning since the internet was in its infancy, writing the School’s first distance learning course in 1999. 

Stuart started his career in design in the 1980s, training as an industrial designer before going on to practise with Design4 Plastics, SilentNight Holdings and Joyce Loebl. He then joined Marchant Filer Dixon, working as a consultant industrial designer, before co-founding his own consultancy – GlenelgProduct Design – in 1990.

Alana James Design AcademicDr Alana James

Dr Alana James is a senior lecturer at our School of Design. Teaching predominantly on the Contemporary and Cultural Influences on Design module, her research interests lie in responsible social and environmental practices in the fashion supply chain from a design perspective. Her work investigates how a collaborative approach to design thinking can help move the industry forward to a more sustainable future. Approaching complex issues from a multi-stakeholder approach, she is passionate about engaging with consumers and applying design strategies to encourage small shifts in behaviour towards large-scale sustainable change.

She is excited about helping Design Management MA students to think differently to devise innovative solutions that will create a brighter future. Find out more about her academic biography here.   


Rafiq Elmansy Design Thinking AcademicRafiq Elmansy

An author, lecturer, design researcher and consultant, Rafiq Elmansy first joined Northumbria School of Design as a lecturer and researcher in 2017. He has over 17 years of experience within the design industry with clients situated around the globe, including the United Nations, the World Bank, Adobe Systems Inc, Schneider, Zendesk and Insala.

A specialist in medical innovation, his current PhD research focuses on design as a driver for medical innovation in patient-centered healthcare technology. Rafiq is also a jury member in a number of design competitions, including the Adobe Design Achievement Awards, A’Design Awards and Poster for Tomorrow, and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and the Royal Society of Arts (RS).
