DE7008 - Fashion Design Proposal

What will I learn on this module?

Fashion Design Proposal gives you opportunity to explore an individually initiated project and to investigate creative and experimental approaches to a specific topic of enquiry. You will build your design project direction and philosophy upon the skills and knowledge gained in this module DE7008, the supporting Design Thinking Module DE7001 and also from your previous experience. You will analytically examine and discuss strategic and future focused trends that will better enable the production of a design proposition framework, upon which your design solutions will be constructed and evaluated. You will explore, use and evaluate traditional and new materials and processes relevant to your concept. Ultimately this will result in you defining a research question, developing a manifesto, constructing a brief, and in turn establishing parameters or agendas to work within for a Fashion Design Proposal.
You will learn from staff with rich research and commercial experience from the Fashion Design Industries, Design for Industry, Service Design, Design Management and Design Thinking. This multidisciplinary approach to teaching will help you to explore new ways of thinking and practices in design.

How will I learn on this module?

In the Fashion Design Proposal DE7008 (Performancewear/Womenswear/Menswear) and through the accompanying Personal Development Plan you will learn through a combination of tutorials, seminars, and tutor guided independent learning and student independent learning. Through tutorial support and studio and workshop based feedback, you will be expected to take responsibility for your own creative development and learning for this self-directed project. You will have formative feedback throughout the module, with peer evaluation forming an important activity, giving you an opportunity to reflect upon feedback prior to submission.

You will collate a Portfolio of work that evidences existing materials, processes, trials, products and current innovation in the self-directed area of research with evaluative written comments about the problem areas. It will include a series of progressive abstracts that evidence design thinking and will culminate in a summative abstract evidencing how the self-directed Project Proposal will develop in the second semester.
To achieve these aims you will be asked to research topics, lead seminars and take an active role in workshops. Interactive weekly sessions will help you define design problem spaces; explore concepts and new materials and processes that might drive innovative solutions for Future Fashion Concepts. You will learn how Research By Design contributes to design knowledge and can drive innovative practices with in a company. You will apply your learning from your research into creating a design proposal that generates new knowledge for the Fashion Discipline. You will be supported in your research by engaging in discussion with an active research community of peers and academic staff. The Fashion design students research by ‘doing’ (RTD – Research Through Design) and will have use of the design studio workshops to further master their design practice skills in developing garments or products to an advanced level.
Collaboration within the University and externally with professional networks, manufacturers and organisations is inherent in the programme curriculum design and delivery and will enable you to implement design work into the commercial environment. The professional communities and networks you build will enable you to move into, or return to, the workplace with greater impact.

You will use Personal Development Planning (PDP) to record and reflect what you have done and to plan what you want to achieve, enabling you to recognise an area that needs to be developed and identifying your personal contribution in design to improve a Fashion product/garment.

The supportive module in Design Thinking DE7001 will aid your research activities for this self led module DE7008 to identify different concepts that will form the grounding of your Fashion Design Proposal.

This learning will aid you in developing a defined question to explore and experiment with materials and processes in for the following module Fashion Design Exploration Materials and Processes DE7009.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported by academic experts who will facilitate discussion in one to one tutorials and group critiques around your chosen subject of inquiry in scheduled timetabled sessions and directed study. These formal conversations are opportunities to receive immediate feedback on on-going work and to act on that feedback. You will keep a record of this feedback in order to progress your work to enhance your skills and intellectual understanding and develop your Fashion Design Proposal (Performancewear/Womenswear/Menswear) and PDP. You will be part of a community of practice that will provide a topic ‘hub’ for cross-organisational collaboration and peer discussion.

You will be involved in reflective practice, which is inherent to the practices within the School of Design. The Masters Fashion programmes are delivered by staff who integrate their individual research activities, expertise and knowledge into their teaching practice and mentoring.

Where appropriate, you will be supported in developing relationships with material suppliers and potential companies that may support and have input into your developing proposal.

Further formal academic support is provided via information posted on E-Learning Portal. Where appropriate, students may also be directed to engage with Study Skills +, or other resources offered through the University Student Support Services such as Dyslexia Support. The Library is open 24 hours a day and E-Learning Portal houses all your module documents including your timetable. These services can be accessed on a range of devices.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding (KU):
2) Develop your personal interpretation of theory and develop personal insights relevant to your field of practice.
3.Investigate and articulate creative and experimental approaches to a specific topic of inquiry developing your personal design knowledge and ethos.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities (IPSA):
4. Present a portfolio of work that evidences existing materials, processes, trials, products and current innovation that communicates your practice to a wide audience.

Personal Values Attributes (PVA):

2. Demonstrate Curiosity and Design Responsibly through innovative practice
4. Reflect on your own processes and practice to advance your knowledge and understanding of your research.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessment 100%

The Portfolio of work with interrogative Creative Process Journal should evidence materials, processes, trials, products and current innovation in the chosen area of research with evaluative written comments about the problem areas. It will include a series of progressive abstracts that evidence design thinking and will culminate in a summative abstract on how the self-directed Design Proposal will develop in the second semester.
A reflective Personal Development Plan will accompany this portfolio of work that records the knowledge, skills and understanding you have attained from undertaking this learning.

Formative assessment will be given throughout the semester through peer and tutor feedback in seminars and tutorial support in developing a learning plan and a summative abstract of Design Proposal intent.
