What will I learn on this module?

This module explores how to integrate coaching as a strategic approach within an organisational development strategy.

This module takes you through a structured exploration of how coaching may contribute to building organisational performance and considers the key building blocks of an effective coaching strategy. You will consider the key elements of a coaching strategy for a case study organisation including: the strategic imperatives for coaching; the role of leadership; internal vs external coaches and mentors, creating a coaching culture through;1:1 and team based approaches; coaching supervision and evaluating effectiveness and return on investment.

This module has relevance for HR and OD professionals seeking to develop an internal coaching strategy and for external consultants supporting a client organisation.

Practical elements will focus on team coaching and coach supervision approaches to compliment the 1:1 coaching capabilities developed elsewhere in the programme.

The module culminates in a written recommendation for a case organisation that seeks to create a coaching culture, implement an integrated coaching strategy or further develop aspects of an organisations coaching capability. Alongside you will create a personal learning log and personal development plan that captures areas for future development in relation to your role in organisational coaching.

How will I learn on this module?

The pedagogic approach which underpins this module, and the programme overall, is “student centred” which places great emphasis upon you reflecting upon your experiences of coaching in order to develop your understanding and practice of coaching within your context.

You will have the opportunity to crystalise your own coaching context, diagnose your own learning and development needs, set learning objectives, identify resources for learning, choose and implement learning strategies and evaluate the achievement of your own learning goals.

You will collaborate with staff and fellow students to create a learning community where you will reflect on the theories and ideas of organisational coaching and how they may apply in various contexts. As this module has a particular focus on creating a coaching culture these ideas will be applied to the learning cohort in that you will consider how the cohort can become a coaching organisation, how you might incorporate coaching interventions such as peer coaching, team coaching and supervision.

Through development of a practical recommendation you will have the chance to practically apply the learning in considering what might be required to create a strategic coaching intervention within an organisation of relevance to you.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

On this module you will be supported academically in a number of ways. You will have access to the module tutor and programme leader for academic guidance and support and there will also be online support and including a series of video and podcasts covering academic writing for postgraduate study, referencing and critical review. You will be encouraged to use the study skills service provided by the library and tutors will provide one to one guidance where needed.

Learning and Feedback: One of the main aims of the programme is to develop your confidence and capability to learn independently. The coaching learning set will facilitate this aim through shared learning enabling you to evaluate and analyse your own approach. You will observe and be observed by your peers and utilise a coaching feedback framework which supports you to ‘notice’ and make sense of your coaching interactions.

The ELearning Portal platform will be used to encourage you to engage in interaction and communication with your fellow students, and to clarify issues arising from your independent study. You will be provided with constructive feedback on your assessed work and, as part of your continuing development you will be able to use the feedback in the preparation of subsequent assignments.

Study Skills: When required programme staff will provide essential study skills and equip you with the fundamental academic expertise needed to successfully complete their postgraduate degree programme.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to implement, monitor and evaluate coachingand / or supervision in an organisational or business context.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
To be able to create an appropriate strategic coaching intervention that supports organisational development within own context.

To create a personal development plan that assesses current organisational coaching capabilities and identifies actions for future development.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural
To demonstrate an awareness of the ethical, cultural, social, relational or boundary issues related to strategic organisational coaching interventions.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed via a 5000 word written assignment that will include a recommendation of a strategic organisational coaching or supervision intervention plus an analysis of your personal development in relation to organisational coaching or supervision.

Assessment will be through the creation of a 3000 word recommendation that includes for implementing a coaching culture :

Module abstract

This module is a must for HR and OD professionals and consultants seeking to develop coaching as a strategic intervention within client organisations. Coaching is seen by L&D professionals as one of the most effective development methods (CIPD, 2015).

This module takes the learners through a structured exploration of how coaching may contribute to building organisational performance and considers the key building blocks of an effective coaching strategy. You will consider the key elements of a coaching strategy for a relevant case study organisation within your practice including: the strategic imperatives for coaching; the role of leadership; internal vs external coaches and mentors, creating a coaching culture through;1:1 and team based approaches; coaching supervision and evaluating effectiveness and return on investment.

The module follows your interestsfocussing on key issues of organisational coaching relevant to yourcontext and employs enquiry based learning to explore issues of relevance to you. . Coaching supervision is core to the module. You will gain learning and professional development in leading and participating in group supervision meetings
