What will I learn on this module?

This module will develop your understanding of the psychological theories that underpin a range of coaching approaches, such as behavioural, cognitive and person centred coaching and the application of neuroscience in coaching. You will research and share knowledge of appropriate tools and techniques that can be used in coaching and the implications of their use. You will enhance your awareness of effective application of approaches, tools and techniques through your practice; considering a range of coaching contexts and scenarios. You will gain greater insight into your own coaching identity and through this you will be able to select appropriate coaching approaches, tools and techniques; working towards your own integrated model of coaching practice. You will learn about the use of psychometrics in coaching and begin to develop your approach to contracting with coaching clients. Through critical reflection and action learning you will develop your practice as a coach and improve your ability to see alternative perspectives and ways of working with coaching clients to support them in their learning and development.

How will I learn on this module?

The learning approach will be “student centred”; which places great emphasis on you reflecting upon your experiences of coaching in order to develop your understanding of your practice of coaching. Therefore, this module emphasises an active learning approach to engage you. A number of learning approaches will be used.
As part of the workshops, there will be tutor led discussions on coaching related theories, models and approaches, exploring the relevance of these in a range of contexts and the implications of use in practice. You will have an opportunity to share your experiences and practice using a range of approaches and techniques both within the workshops and during peer coaching practice between the workshops. This enables you to experience being a coach, coachee and an observer to appreciate the roles of the coach and coachee within the coaching process to inform your practice. You will receive formative feedback from tutors and peers.
To reflect on your practice you will be supported by your coaching learning set where shared learning and a coaching feedback framework will enable you to analyse and evaluate your approach. There will be directed independent learning activities for you to complete between the workshops. Typically these might include reading, research, gathering data about personal and organisational practices, reflecting on how practice relates to theory, preparing written assessment reports and collating appropriate evidence.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Induction: As for other modules on this programme, an induction session will be delivered at the beginning of the programme to enable you to discuss expectations; explore issues relating to the programme structure and delivery, and to provide practical guidance in terms of study skills, use of library and assignment writing. This is also supported by online support and includes a series of video and podcasts which introduce the learners to the university, programme, support mechanisms, e learning resources, modules and academic writing for postgraduate study.

Learning and Feedback: On this module, you will also be supported by the tutors through guidance and feedback and by fellow learners through the coaching learning set. These mechanisms will facilitate this through discussion, guidance, shared learning and feedback. There will also be a coaching feedback framework which supports you to ‘notice’ and make sense of this in relation to you as a coaches to aid your learning.
The ELearning Portal platform will be used to encourage you to engage in interaction and communication with your fellow students, and to clarify issues arising from your independent study. You will be provided with constructive feedback on your assessed work and, as part of your continuing development you will be able to use the feedback in the preparation of subsequent assignments.

Study Skills: When required programme staff will provide essential study skills and equip you with the fundamental academic expertise needed to successfully complete their postgraduate degree programme.
Assessment Guidance
you will be prepared for the assessments through detailed guidance form the module tutors. Expectations and marking criteria will be explicitly explained and any queries you have with regard to the assessment process will be explained. You will be provided with a detailed assessment brief and supported throughout the process.
Individual guidance will be provided by the module tutors either through face to face meetings, e mail, skype or telephone conversations.

Coach Supervision: Through out the programme you will participate in group supervision activities. These sessions will focus your personal development. Taking an action learning approach, you can explore coaching challenges within the safety of a trusted peer group. Through discussion and reflection you will consider alternative strategies and identify new actions to take forward into your coaching practice.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of psychological theories, tools and techniques underpinning contemporary coaching practice and the implications of use.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
To demonstrate the selection and integration of appropriate coaching approaches, tools and techniques facilitating personal development and self awareness in the coachee

To demonstrate critically reflection on your use of coaching approaches, tools and techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of your coaching interventions in relation to your practice.

How will I be assessed?

A summative 10 minute individual presentation using a visual representation of the psychological approaches to coaching. The presentation will explain the advantages and disadvantages, the range of potential coaching contexts and the tools and techniques associated with each approach. (K&U 1, IPSA 1)

A summative assessed coaching practice session of 30 minutes duration (pass/fail)

A summative 2,000 reflective account of the student’s exploration and practice of the coaching approaches, including a critique of the application of the approaches drawing on own coaching experiences from within and out with the programme.

HR9700 Understanding Coaching

Module abstract

This module is aimed at practising coaches, consultants, managers or leaders from any profession who wish to develop their coaching knowledge and skills. The module builds confidence in providing professional coaching in a range of contexts. It does this by providing insight into a range of coaching approaches, tools and techniques and an opportunity to practice these in a safe environment that supports your learning and development. A unique feature is that through the coaching learning sets and reflective practice you are able to develop your own coaching approach that is tailored to your context and the way in which you want to operate as a coach. It also provides a platform from which to operate as an internal or external coach, by supporting learners to develop their own ethical practice through professional contracting.
