Application Portfolio Submission

Apply to study the postgraduate Master of Fine Art at Northumbria University

Applications to the MFA can be made throughout the year by submitting an online application form including a statement (500 word maximum) evaluating your recent studio work and indicating why you have applied for the MFA at Northumbria along with contact details for two referees.

Visual evidence of your work should also be submitted in support of your application. The preferred format is to send URL links (web links) to access examples of your work online (particularly if it is video-based). Alternatively, candidates can submit a folio of 10-20 images of recent work and/or video files totalling no longer than 10 minutes duration. Images should be sent as PDF or Powerpoint files or as jpegs (72dpi). In all cases, details of individual works, including title, media and date should accompany the application.

In some instances, depending on if your work is for example performative, collaborative, site-specific, computer generated etc, it is important to include some contextual information, offering insight into both the making process and the public realisation of the artworks.

Visual work can also be sent as jpegs/Powerpoint on CD or video on DVD (PAL format only) to our Applicant Services team:

Supporting material should be securely packaged and clearly labelled with your name and address; Northumbria University cannot accept responsibility for any loss/damage. You should write 'MFA Fine Art Portfolio' and your name on the outside of the envelope so that it can be matched with your application.

Only complete applications together with visual evidence and two referees can be considered. We examine portfolios, and may then invite you to attend an interview. Applicants not based in the UK are not required to attend an interview, however, we may conduct an interview via Skype. The decision to offer a place will be based on interviews along with the completed application form, portfolio, the supporting statement and references.

If you would like to visit our facilities and discuss the course with staff this can be arranged by contacting acting course leader Sandra Johnston or Professor Rona Lee
