PSN (Paper Studio Northumbria)

Paper Studio Northumbria provides a unique facility nationally and internationally for the research, teaching and scholarship of paper in relation to fine art, conservation and archiving as well as into the practice of papermaking. The studio provides two large project spaces, papermaking and mounting areas, an archive of European and Far Eastern papers and a seminar space.

An interest in paper as both subject and support plays a central role for a number of fine art and paper conservation staff at Northumbria, including research into paper in relation to performance, indexicality, the archive, semiotics and the expanded field of contemporary drawing; they have worked with major national and international institutions including the Sage, Gateshead; the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford; the V&A, London; BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

PSN has been established by Siân Bowen, Reader in Fine Art, together with lead members from the Paper Research Group, Keith McIntyre, Chris Dorsett and Jane Colbourne. Research carried out by staff is embedded into teaching and learning across all Fine Art programmes. Talks and workshops are also given by leading specialists and international artists. PSN is a facility open to students from BA to PhD. thus offering a platform for exchange of ideas.

A web archive of research activities carried out in PSN including doctoral projects, exhibitions, artist residencies and seminars can be found at
