How Newcastle Business School Is Striving To Create The Responsible Business Leaders Of Tomorrow

“Ethical leadership is knowing your core values and having the courage to live them in all parts of your life in service of the common good.”

Center for Ethical Leadership

Traditionally, business leaders are focused on achieving commercial objectives. As a result, it’s fair to say that the rights and feelings of others, as well as an organisation's impact on society at large, haven’t always been top priorities for some managers.

However, times have changed.

Today, great leaders need more than just business acumen. They need high levels of cultural and societal awareness, emotional intelligence and a drive to transform their organisation, and the world, for the better.

We've seen the reputational, and even legal, damage that can occur when senior managers make poor ethical decisions – Volkswagen’s emissions scandal and multiple Uber controversies being two prominent examples. Cases like these show why it’s important to equip tomorrow’s business leaders with responsible management and sustainability skills.

Newcastle Business School is proud to be at the forefront in this area. Not only is responsible business one of our key research focuses, but we are also a signatory of the UN sponsored Principles of Responsible Management Education. We’re committed to promoting responsible and sustainable entrepreneurship and business in all of our teaching, consulting and research.

Become A Responsible Business Leader

These key skills are taught throughout every module of our Business and Management MBus.

For example, our Globalisation, Innovation and Sustainability module teaches students how to implement strategies that support organisational development in innovative and sustainable ways. Similarly, International Finance and Responsible Financial Management examines professional codes of conduct in the finance industry, exploring the tensions between responsible business operations and maximisation of shareholder wealth.

By the time you graduate from this unique three year course, you’ll have strengthened your knowledge of the ethical contexts in which international business operates, as well as your ability to identify responsible solutions to complex problems. You’ll also have that all important, crucial understanding of the wider impact that individual and organisational decision making has on the wider world.
