What will I learn on this module?

You will build upon your knowledge of psychrometrics, gained in Thermal Conditioning Systems 1, as you learn how to design commonly used UK air conditioning systems, namely; constant volume dew point control, constant volume sequenced control and fan coil units.
You will use your knowledge of fundamental fluid flow, gained in the ‘Fluid Systems’ module, to learn how to design practical duct work systems using the equal friction method.
The key components of air handling and refrigeration plant (including refrigeration cycles) will be explored in order to build your understanding of practical air conditioning equipment selection and sizing.
You will learn how to design heating systems for buildings in order to meet the efficiency requirements of the Building Regulations (Part L). Your understanding of fluid flow will be applied to the design of pipework systems where you will learn about initial and critical pipe sizing and how to select an appropriate pump. The need to pressurise water based heating systems will be explored and you will learn through this the fundamental differences between low, medium and high pressure hot water heating systems. The application of variable speed pumping will also be studied and you will learn how to quantify the advantages and challenges that such an approach presents.
You will also learn about the provision, design and sizing of domestic hot and cold water systems for buildings.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through a series of lectures and seminars supported by laboratory activities. Lecture periods will be used to convey the bulk of the information and theoretical principles. Seminar sessions will be of a problem solving nature to enable you to apply the theory gained from the lectures in practical system design or analysis problems. These sessions also provide opportunies for active discussion and the provision of formative feedback in a low risk environment where we hope you will feel free to ask questions.
Directed learning consists of tutorial problem sheets and laboratory reports designed to further your understanding and confidence and prepare you for a placement year and the level 6 design project. Independent learning supports both the coursework reports and examination assessment.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will include feedback from tutors during seminars, lectures and laboratories. In addition tutors will use the University’s eLearning Portal (eLP) to provide electronic versions of all module material. The University’s eLearning Portal offers remote access to materials and aids for reinforcing your learning. Some sessions will be video recorded and made available for your revision purposes via the eLP. Additionally the online reading list will frequently link directly to resources in the Universities award winning library making your study efficient.

MLO1 Design and optimise pipe and duct networks for building HVAC systems and select appropriate fans/pumps.

MLO2 Select appropriate HVAC plant and analyse the characteristics of these systems in their operation.

MLO3 You will develop your skills in the design of air conditioning and heating systems which you will be able to use in your placement and employment. Employers are looking for people who can design practical, energy efficient systems for a large number of building types and applications.

MLO4 Be able to explain passive building design measures and low carbon heating, ventilating and cooling strategies and how these are positive ways to contribute to today’s global society concerned with the impacts of climate change.

How will I be assessed?

Your main element of summative assessment (70%) will be an examination which will assess your knowledge and understanding in the key areas of the subject needed for the development of your design skills. The second summative coursework is a portfolio (30%) designed for the assessment of your practical skills and, in this module, will include laboratory work. Each of these assessments cover all the stated learning outcomes.
You will experience formative assessment through problem solving tasks in the seminar sessions and as part your directed learning. The rationale for these problem solving tasks is to support and enhance your learning by the application of systems design procedures and analysis techniques to specific design situations. The aim is to broaden and deepen your understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject by practical application and analysis.
Formative feedback shall be delivered verbally to you during the seminar sessions and during small group laboratory practical’s. Written feedback is provided upon return of the coursework which is designed to help you enhance your performance in future work. You will also receive feedback for your exam in the form of brief comments/marks on your exam script and a marking scheme which will be made available to you via our eLearning Platform.

Module abstract

Studying this module will enable you to build an essential understanding of heating and air conditioning systems design, operation and analysis. This module presents a comprehensive and detailed consideration of the theory and practice of heating and air conditioning systems selection and design. System design is considered by studying the characteristics of major components and their performance within complete systems.
This module will prepare you for later modules such as Interdisciplinary Design Project and Systems Modelling and Analysis, as well as for the optional placement in your third year. Employers are looking for skilled design engineers who can work as individuals and as members of a team in designing energy efficient systems for buildings and analysing their performance.
Assessment is by examination (70%) and a coursework portfolio (30%). Formative feedback is in seminars and practical laboratory sessions. You will also engage with research outputs as part of your research-rich learning.
