What will I learn on this module?
You will learn about various advanced aspects related to manufacturing systems including industrial automation and control; electrical and pneumatic control systems; and manufacturing philosophies/ tools. You will cover how these tools and philosophies can be used for conventional as well as non-conventional manufacturing systems. You will focus on the critical application of those systems in order to solve complex problems, including those in unfamiliar environments. You will learn about engaging with the theoretical knowledge: through seminar sessions and by exploring specific case studies.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through the transfer of knowledge in the classes and the investigation and application of practical issues in laboratories through the solving of industrial problems and the tackling of open ended problems. You will be engaged in the module which will be delivered using formal lectures and laboratory sessions. The lectures will also include the solving of problems and formative feedback will be given on the results. You will use the laboratories to apply your knowledge to solve problems and you will receive formative feedback on your work to assist you in developing and improving. In addition, where possible, industrial visits and guest lectures will be provided.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
The direct contact with tutors in lectures will offer you knowledge and the laboratory sessions will give opportunities to apply it and to discuss what happens and develop what you are learning so that you can improve. This will be enhanced by the tutors giving you guidance on what else to read and engage with so that you can finally develop your own ability to seek out further information. Another perspective will be provided by using guest lectures. The guided learning arising for the class contact will be supplemented by resources made available on our eLP. You will also get formative and constructive feedback during the problem solving sessions and during the laboratories. You will also receive feedback on the multiple-choice test as well as the marked written closed book examination paper.

MLO1 utilise complex methodologies to create solutions to a variety of real-world mechanical engineering problems
MLO2 Formulate verifiable solutions to engineering problems through the use of analytical methods and computer software
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO3 Illustrate critically selected solutions to complex mechanical engineering problems
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
MLO4 Exercise creativity and initiative in the development of solutions to engineering problems.
MLO5 Describe, with justification, solutions to benefit society by applying structured mechanical engineering practise.
How will I be assessed?
Summative Assessments
Coursework (30%, 2500 words or equivalent) and assessing MLO 1 & MLO 4
Examination, (70%, 2.5 hr) assessing MLOs 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5,
Individual written feedback will be provided on all summative assessments within 20 working days.
Formative Assessments
Formative assessments will take place during seminar sessions. The formative engagement will involve you on an individual basis if you encounter problems. Formative feedback shall be delivered verbally during these sessions.

Module abstract
In this module you will explore advanced topics in the areas of manufacturing system design and industrial automation. You will design and implement electrical and pneumatic control systems that are used in manufacturing technology whilst also evaluating their safety through appropriate risk analysis. The module will provide a body of knowledge to allow you to specify, design, evaluate and optimise a manufacturing system using the latest manufacturing tools embodied within lean manufacturing philosophies. Typically open ended problems, depicting real industrial situations, will be tackled during lectures, seminars and lab work. Summative assessment will be by a multiple-choice test and written examination. You will get formative feedback during lectures and laboratories as well as summative feedback on the multiple-choice test and the examination.
