What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the most important issues for managing in an engineering environment. We will introduce you to the methods used to make financial decisions in evaluating engineering and manufacturing options from an economic viewpoint. You will learn about working with people by considering the techniques used to evaluate and improve personal, team and organisational efficiency levels. Your learning will be further enhanced with content on how such factors may be influenced by quality control aspects, together with their importance and links in terms of engineering project management. You will be given opportunities to develop as a professional by reflecting upon the role of effective interpersonal communication and personal skills development.

Some of the syllabus areas you will engage with will be:

? Personal development planning, knowledge of relevant legislation and codes of conduct and the need to communicate balanced arguments relating to professional and ethical issues.
? Business Costing / Finance - Financial decision making tools, financial costing systems and budgetary control.
? Industrial engineering - The techniques used to evaluate and improve efficiency in terms of operators, machines, systems and the organisation as a whole.
? Professional Skills - Social, ethical, communication and personal development
? Quality Assurance Techniques - Total quality, Control systems used to measure and evaluate quality, Established methodologies [six-sigma, ISO9000].
? Project Management - Managing and controlling engineering projects, Project Appraisal, Teamwork, Risk management.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn theory and key concepts in lectures and we will use seminar tasks and online support to provide focused skill-development tasks to ensure you can meet the learning outcomes of the module. Tasks will give you the opportunity to explore some of the ethical and interpersonal issues likely to be encountered by engineering professionals. The use of guest lectures by practising professionals external to the University will be incorporated as much as possible to reinforce the relevance and application of such content, especially in the professional skills element of the syllabus where such emphasis would be of most significance.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The direct contact with tutors in classes will offer you knowledge and the chance to discuss issues and develop what you are learning so that you can improve. This will be enhanced by the tutors giving you guidance on what else to read and engage with so that you can finally develop your own ability to seek out further information. This will include relevant literature and professional codes. The guided learning arising for the class contact will be supplemented by resources made available on our electronic learning platform.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

• an exam (70%) covering the economics, industrial engineering, quality and project management aspects of the module. MLO 1, 2, 3.

• a portfolio (30%) consisting of written work related to professional skills, including evidence of research, PDP and report writing in the context of the professional engineering management. MLO 4, 5.

Formative Assessments

Formative assessment will be achieved through in-class seminar tasks where students will work individually and with peers on activities related to the lecture contents. Formative feedback can also be given electronically through the eLP where appropriate-

Feedback: Students will be able to submit the summatively assessed portfolio tasks at intervals rather than at the end of the course which will allow for formative feedback to be given during the course. This formative feedback will support students in their completion of the following portfolio tasks.

Examination feedback will be provided following the normal processes to show generically where the cohort has a strong or weaker answer to the examination, together with written feedback on individual exam papers.





Module abstract

Have you ever stopped to think about how engineering organisations are run? How they make decisions about what equipment to buy, what products to make to gain the highest return, how they manage and implement projects, measure company success in both operational and financial terms, as well as what they and professional bodies expect of engineering staff involved?

This module will address some of these questions, giving you an insight into the management of engineering organisations, with special emphasis being placed upon financial aspects and management tools relating to quality control and project management.

It will introduce key professional engineering staff competencies relating to professional development and expectations, by placing yourself in the context of an early career engineering professional, highlighting career skills and issues pertaining to professional body membership and expectation as well as societal issues. Competence in these key topics will have direct impact upon your employability.
