What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the Fundamental Science behind key engineering subjects. Based on this knowledge, you will develop systematic understanding of the knowledge-base of engineering subjects which will help you to be able to analyse complex issues on your own as you begin to become an independent reflective practitioner over the course of the programme. You will be taught about four key areas which are

Mechanics, Dynamics and Structural Fundamentals
Fluid Fundamentals
Thermodynamics Fundamentals
Electrical Fundamentals

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through engaging with the tutors in lectures, seminars and laboratory’s. The lectures will give you the knowledge you need so that you can discuss the issues and solve problems in the seminars and laboratory sessions where the tutors will guide you. In addition you will be expected to seek out additional information yourself and bring it into the learning process.

This will help you gain and understanding of the differing learning strategies at this early stage of the programme, such as: information and learning resource research, self-assessment, problem solving, lab engagement, lecture listening and note-taking, time management and planning, group discussion, and communication with lecturers.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

This module will include lecture classes where as a larger group you will be expected to exercise your ability in note taking and also be supported by additional materials to consolidate your understanding on the eLP (electronic learning portal).

Where you are involved in smaller seminar and practical sessions you will be involved in exercises where your tutor will be able to give direct formative feedback on your performance. It is important that you fully engage in these seminar and practical sessions by completing any directed learning preparation material for this formative feedback to develop and compliment your own reflection upon your learning.

If you find that you have questions, either to assist your understanding or through academic curiosity, the practical and seminar classes will provide an opportunity to discuss these with your tutor in addition to the regular support provided by the Department's standard student support processes as described in your programme handbook.

MLO2 Apply scientific principles to analyse mechanical engineering problems and key engineering processes.
MLO3 Identify, classify and describe the performance of mechanical systems and components through the use of analytical methods and modelling techniques.
MLO4 Manage the design process by performing appropriate calculations and evaluating the outcomes of engineering systems

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

20% Semester 2 Assignment: MLO 1,2,5
Laboratory and research report

You will be provided summative feedback via the Lab and Research report to show the weak points in knowledge, skills and awareness of science and engineering challenges.

40% Semester 1 Exam MLO 1,2,3,4
40% Semester 2 Exam MLO 1,2,3,4

You will be provided summative feedback via Exam to show the weak points in knowledge, skills and abilities.

Formative Assessments:

Seminars (problem solving) MLO 1, 2, 3, 4

You will be provided formative feedback on seminar work which will include problems designed to aid your understanding.

Module abstract

The module, Engineering Systems, includes a range of subjects, from mechanics, thermodynamics to electrics, involving engineering applications of fundamental science that are closely linked to rest of the programme. This will help you generate an insight of engineering methodologies, and start developing your vision of future engineering career.

The module will also provide you with the fundamental scientific foundations which will allow you to develop throughout the programme to become an effective, reflective, practising engineer. This will be delivered through active engagement between you, your tutors and the teaching and learning environment we provide involving our electronic support systems and our newly improved laboratories. Assessment will work alongside tutor feedback to give you the opportunity to perform to your best ability.
