What will I learn on this module?

You will learn the theory and methods of analysis and evaluation of mechanical and structural systems for their dynamical and vibrational behaviour. You will specifically learn about the kinetics of particles and rigid bodies and learn how to derive the equations of motion for a number of single and multi-degree of freedom systems. The module will cover concepts surrounding the conservation of momentum as well as the conservation of energy in order to understand the dynamics of these systems. During the numerical aspect of this module you will learn the concepts that will allow you to take the equations of motion for complex mechanical systems and solve them in order to obtain the forces, positions, velocities and accelerations.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn the concepts related to and the theories behind the dynamic analysis of mechanical and structural elements during lectures and this will be consolidated through application in problem solving seminars, numerical analysis workshops and laboratory sessions. During the workshop sessions, you will practice modelling and dynamic analysis of typical and complex mechanical elements and structural systems using industry standard software.. During the laboratory experiments, you will learn about practical aspects of dynamics such as measurements and monitoring. You will be assessed formally by an assignment and a final examination. Seminar and workshop sessions will offer you great learning opportunity in which you will receive feedback on your progress through discussions with tutors.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will learn theory and key concepts in lectures, and we will use seminar tasks and online support to provide focused skill-development tasks to ensure you can meet the learning outcomes of the module. Direct contact with the tutors will provide you with direct support both in class and through the eLearning portal. In addition, our open-door approach will offer you the opportunity to develop professional methods of engaging with support which will assist you as you progress in your career as an engineer.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
• You will be formatively assessed on all learning outcomes during the workshops and laboratory sessions by the module tutor leading the session. Discussion with the module tutor and reflection on your performance will allow you to continuously monitor your ability to feed this forward for your improvement.
• You will be formatively assessed on all learning outcomes by engaging with a progressive connected series of online quizzes. These will be completed in stages on a weekly basis. You will receive feedback to allow you to feedforward your learning to improve your examination technique.


Summative Assessment
You will be summatively assessed by Coursework and Examination.

1. Coursework. You will be assigned to work in a group by the module tutor. You will complete and submit a single piece of individual coursework based on a system analysis task set by the module tutor. Your coursework will be used to assess your ability to satisfy MLOs 3, 4, and 5. You will receive individual feedback with marks and comments for each task and sub-task that you complete. Due to unforeseen circumstances, if you are given a Deferral (because of a PEC) or are asked to complete a Referral (following the PAB), you will be asked by the module tutor to complete an individual coursework equivalent to a student’s contribution to the group work. The individual coursework will also be based on the group work set by the module tutor. Any resulting concerns raised by the group will be resolved by the module tutor.
2. Examination. You will sit a closed book examination that will only have compulsory questions. The examination will assess your ability to satisfy MLOs 1 and 2. You will receive feedback with marks and comments on the questions you have answered.

Module abstract

This module is about analysis of mechanical and structural systems for their dynamic behaviour. It aims to apply dynamic analysis methods in solving complex mechanical and structural problems using analytical and numerical techniques. Strong background in analytical and numerical analysis of mechanical and structural systems offers a good grounding for progression through the programme and makes you ready to engage with further investigation which will increase your employability.
