What will I learn on this module?

You will gain knowledge and analytical skills to design and manufacture automotive components. In particular, in this module you will develop advanced techniques for 3D Design, real world static and dynamic event simulation, optimisation and manufacturing simulation applied to products. On completion of this module you should be able to accurately analyse, specify and predict a design performance using techniques covered in this module. In addition you will be actively involved in designing and building car prototypes for Shell Eco-Marathon competition.

How will I learn on this module?

In this module you will use of the knowledge and analytical skills developed during previous studies to specify, design and manufacture products for automotive industry using CATIA 3D design. This involves the analysis and use of manufacturing systems and software package that is commonly used by leading automotive industries. You will use a range of analytical techniques and systems to make performance predictions and to support theoretical considerations of the systems´ design process. The module is focused on an industrially relevant product development project which has individual and group based elements. This is intended to allow you to experience and demonstrate your depth of understanding of the design, analysis and manufacturing processes and to give you the opportunity to reflect upon modern product development practices in automotive engineering. On completion of this module, you will be able to explain the principles that underpin the process of vehicle design and modelling, understand the influence of aerodynamically induced forces and moments on the mechanics of a road vehicle and understand the fundamentals of vehicle handling behaviour. Through the acquired depth of your understanding, you will be able to relate this learning to the process of vehicle design.

The module will use a combination of scheduled lecture and supporting seminar/laboratory sessions. In this module you will be assessed via an individual project and a group project. You will receive formative feedback throughout the year in the form of verbal feedback and seminar sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

In addition to direct contact with the module team during lectures and seminars, your engagement with this module will go beyond the classroom through practical sessions – in both CAD based design using CATIA, and through hands-on car-building assembly experience that will immerse you in the module learning. Module support is achieved through engagement with tutors in the classroom, practical sessions and through the comprehensive and directed use of supporting resources including relevant texts, student software downloads and relevant multimedia materials. Your access to these resources will be made available through e-learning portal, lectures and seminars.

Summative Assessments

Formative Assessments

Introduction to Vehicle Deign (KB4005)



Module abstract

The module will introduce the theoretical aspects of concepts and methods of the automotive design and analysis and the use of engineering materials to create and develop economically viable vehicle parts and components to satisfy customer and user needs. It will include both computer-aided design and car prototype development. The module is intended to relate and develop your knowledge and understanding of fundamental engineering principles and theory to the field of vehicle design. You will learn about research methods for the experimental validation and modelling of vehicle components and then apply those methods to design and build a vehicle prototype for Shell Eco-marathon competition through the use of the Automotive Engineering laboratory facilities and through the use of industry-standard software. By combining the lectures and laboratory sessions you will have a chance to extend your knowledge and perspectives.
