What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about the application of advanced design techniques and technologies for mechanical engineering problems. The headline issues you will be covering in this module are design techniques (DFM, DFA, DFMEA, DOE etc.), design process, integrated CAE systems (CAD, CAM, FEA and CFD), sustainable design and critical thinking and performance review. All these headline issues are interconnected and you are expected to meet learning outcomes of the module by employing an interconnected approach for these critical concepts. The role and use of Intellectual property, its protection and exploitation, will also be covered as part of the R&D/Design process.

You will further develop and deepen your materials science knowledge already gained in earlier modules, to establish relationships between materials properties, microstructure, and service performance. An understanding and application of Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) on how materials (metals, ceramics, polymers and composites) are selected and specified in industry will be developed. You will also gain an understanding of materials and product manufacture and causes of materials and structural failure.

Your learning will be achieved from lectures and seminars and application, demonstrate your knowledge and understanding by undertaking both individual exercises (product deconstruction and revitalisation) and group activity based exercises (design, analyse, simulate, manufacture, test and disseminate findings).

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through engaging with a variety of engaging learning opportunities: there will be a lecture programme to cover technical aspects and transfer knowledge as well as lab based CAE tools development sessions which will be supported by case study and invited industrial speakers. You will be encouraged to engage with the IMechE regional seminars. Your experience will be enhanced by engagement with real world problems, whereby you have to use innovation, design theory and simulation to predict the performance of a product and even manufacture your designs as working prototypes.
The use of “flipped class”, recorded key lecturers and seminars will enhance the learning experience. A field visit will be used to allow you and your colleagues to explore, evaluate, analyse and improve an engineering system, which will form part of the group project.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module will be delivered by a module team (min 2) who will manage and deliver the lecture programme, seminar and tutorial support. The lectures will be used to explain key concepts and then the directed learning will encourage you to develop independent learning, supported by the seminar discussions with both peers and academics. The use of case studies and industrial lectures from practicing engineers will further enhance your learning experience and employability. The CAD, ICME and FEA software resources will be made available to you to download to your own pc/laptops and learning materials will be available through the e-learning portal. The use of e-learning portal discussion board and the feedback surveys will enable issues to be highlighted and resolved quickly and efficiently. Directed learning from key text will be indicated and lectures will be made available on eLP before their actual presentation to enable students to prepare for the topics covered in class in advance.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

1 - Group Work (40%)
The team will work collaboratively on a major project which will require design, analysis and manufacturing skills.

The group will present their findings to their peers via a presentation (15 minutes) and individual reflective report (one side of A4). Feedback given to you from your peers via feedback forms and from the academic team within 14 working days. MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

2 - Closed Book Individual Examination (60%)
MLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
2 hour examination. Examination paper to have two sections A & B, each section 3 questions (20 marks) covering materials/materials failure and design techniques and applications.
Feedback provided to students individually in class within 20 working days from submission.

Formative Assessments

Seminars will involve discussion and problem solving sessions in which you will be able to consider, discuss and reflect on issues which will feed forward to your further learning and the assessed work.





Module abstract

Mechanical Design and Analysis – is fundamental to designing sustainable innovative products and infrastructure we all take for granted! This module will enable you to generate innovative, robust, sustainable, solutions to poorly defined problems, considering environmental, manufacturing, materials, failure mechanisms, cost, operation and true life cycle cost of ownership.

You will learn to apply advanced techniques for 3D design, analysis (design/materials/life cycle cost), manufacture, evaluate and test a range of solutions to determine the optimum solution, in a supportive collaborative group environment to solve real world problems.
Assessment is based on understanding of design techniques and materials (Examination 60%) and directed and managed group work, demonstrating the application of the techniques (40% including peer review) to an industrial product.
