What will I learn on this module?

You will learn the theory and methods of analysis and evaluation of mechanical and structural systems for their dynamical and vibrational behaviour. You will specifically learn about the kinetics of particles and rigid bodies and learn how to derive the equations of motion for a number of single and multi-degree of freedom systems. The module will cover concepts surrounding the conservation of momentum as well as the conservation of energy in order to understand the dynamics of these systems. During the numerical aspect of this module you will learn the concepts that will allow you to take the equations of motion for complex mechanical systems and solve them in order to obtain the forces, positions, velocities and accelerations.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn the concepts related to and the theories behind the dynamic analysis of mechanical and structural elements during lectures and this will be consolidated through application in problem solving seminars, numerical analysis workshops and laboratory sessions. During the workshop sessions, you will practice modelling and dynamic analysis of typical and complex mechanical elements and structural systems using industry standard software.. During the laboratory experiments, you will learn about practical aspects of dynamics such as measurements and monitoring. You will be assessed formally by an assignment and a final examination. Seminar and workshop sessions will offer you great learning opportunity in which you will receive feedback on your progress through discussions with tutors.

MLO1 Knowledge of dynamic analysis of simple mechanical and structural systems using analytical methods.
MLO2 Demonstrate understanding of the numerical methods and their differences with analytical methods.

MLO3 Ability to use a numerical tools to model and analyse complex mechanical and structural elements for dynamic behaviour.
MLO4 Ability to set up laboratory measurement equipment for the purpose of system monitoring.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments
• Coursework- Assignment (50%)
A group-work system analysis assignment will assess MLOs 3, 4 and 5. Within 20 days after the submission date, you will receive a feedback sheet with marks and comments on each task and sub-tasks.

• Examination (50%)
A closed book examination will assess MLOs 1 & 2. Written feedback will be given on your exam script within 20 working days after the exam.

Formative Assessments
• You will be assessed on all learning outcomes during the workshops and laboratory sessions. Discussion with the tutors and reflection on your performance will allow you to continuously monitor your performance and feed this forward for improvement.

• A progressive connected series of online quizzes that are completed in stages on a weekly basis, including feedback to allow students to feedforward their learning and examination technique.

It aims to apply dynamic analysis methods in solving complex mechanical and structural problems using analytical and numerical techniques. Strong background in analytical and numerical analysis of mechanical and structural systems offers a good grounding for progression through the programme and makes you ready to engage with further investigation which will increase your employability.
