What will I learn on this module?

On completing this module you will have the ability to develop innovative products using design processes, digital 3D design, analysis and manufacturing techniques. Your knowledge of the product design process will be developed from project planning through to production. You will learn to generate concept designs, appraising their merits to justify your selection of concept progression to the design stage. You will consequently learn to rationalise development decisions against consideration of product assembly, manufacture, sustainability, cost effectiveness, robustness and experimental design. Furthermore you will be able to advance your use of product design techniques to include solid and surface modelling, utilise design analysis tools encompassing Finite Element methods, and apply to Additive Manufacturing Rapid Tooling and Rapid Manufacturing in the product development process.

How will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will learn through a combination of lectures, practical laboratory based sessions and seminars. You will be provided with case studies to allow you to critically review the design of an existing application and develop your own ideas and products via seminar sessions. Your practical skills in the use of relevant industrially based packages will be developed through lectures and seminar. Lectures would also provide a formative approach to assessment with problems to solve. You will learn through seminar sessions which provide a rich feedback framework based on problem based learning. The learning in the seminar sessions will be carried out by fostering teamwork in a development environment and enhancing the students' knowledge of the subject matter through peer engagement. Lecturing and other materials will be placed on eLP prior to their presentation and you will be encouraged to engage with them before attending the scheduled sessions.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be supported through scheduled lectures by the module team. The lectures will be supplemented by presentations produced by you and your student peers, and where possible guest speakers who are experts in the field. Your knowledge will be consolidated and applied in laboratory and seminar sessions which will support your ability to place your learning into context. You will also be supported with the use of the eLearning Portal (online platform) where the module content is provided along with links to the reading list support, seminar questions, case studies and appropriate web sites showing relation of the theory to the industrial context of the module. In addition to scheduled delivery, the module team are also easily available to you in their offices, via email and on the discussion forum on eLP.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

• Written technical report on an individual product design and optimisation project (50%) that will enable you to develop your individual design and analysis skills. MLO 1,3

• Group presentation (50%) on a group product development project designed to allow you to gain experience in design, optimisation and manufacture in a real world style team environment. Group work will be assessed by a panel of at least 2 academics and feedback will be provided at the conclusion of the presentation. MLO 2, 4, 5

Formative Assessments

• Formative feedback will be provided on the laboratory and seminar work (Los: 1,2,3 and 4).

• You will be provided verbal feedback on formative assessment during the laboratory and seminar sessions. Written and verbal feedback will be provided on the product development project.

Module abstract

This module will develop your ability to develop innovative products using advanced design and manufacturing technologies. You will investigate current problems in product design and be able to solve real life problems from initial ideas for prototype development. By the use of up-to-date literature from cutting edge journals, you will be able to understand current state of knowledge in the area of product development. With is information, you will be able to enhance your ability when face with complex design issues.

Technology enhanced learning has been incorporated into the design of the programme and its adoption and use will be continually reviewed to ensure that opportunities to benefit the student learning journey are being fully utilised. Electronic submission of coursework, and feedback upon the same, has been adopted wherever possible. This benefits the students since they can easily review their earlier submissions and the feedback provided to ensure that they are aware about the advice they have received regarding improving their performance. Online (via eLP) formative assessments are used to enable students to practice problem solving and build confidence in their independent learning.
