What will I learn on this module?

You will learn about technologies for the utilisation of renewable and sustainable energy sources for heat and power production using heat engines and other types of converters, specifically about the followings:

• Solar, biomass, hydrogen and waste thermal energy resources
• Principles of internal and external combustion engines for thermal conversion of Renewable Energy; Design and thermodynamics of Stirling Engines
• Solar thermal energy: overview of low and high temperature solar thermal energy conversion. Design and analysis of solar collectors for low temperature solar thermal energy conversion. High temperature solar power production technologies using concentrating mirrors
• Heat and power plants operating with combustion of solid biomass
• Technologies for production of biofuels. Design of energy units operating on biofuels
• Geo-thermal: conversion theory and technology, measurement techniques and design considerations
• Hydrogen technology and fuel cells
• Nuclear power stations

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn related theories and concepts via lectures, seminars and workshops. Seminar sessions and laboratory work provide an interactive learning environment, where you will integrate theory and practice. Assessment will offer learning opportunities both formally through the marking and feedback and informally through the discussions with tutors in and out of the classroom.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Direct contact with the tutors will provide you with direct support both in class and through the eLearning portal. In addition our open door approach will offer you the opportunity to develop professional methods of engaging with support which will assist you as you progress in your career as an engineer.

Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge which is at the forefront of different types of renewable and sustainable energy sources and the engineering methods for their utilisation for heat and power production.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO2. Critically perform advanced calculations for the conceptual design of various energy converters.
MLO3. Critically apply theories to the investigation of renewable and sustainable energy thermo-mechanical converter design problems using relevant software tools.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
MLO4. Demonstrate increase awareness of the environmental impact of the development of high performance renewable and sustainable energy solutions.

How will I be assessed?

Summative Assessments

1. Coursework- Investigative Lab Report Assignment (40%). This will MLOs 1 and 2. Within 20 days after the submission date, you will receive a feedback sheet with marks and comments on each task and sub-tasks.

2. Examination (60%). This will assess all MLOs. Written feedback will be given on your exam script within 20 working days after the exam.

Formative Assessments

You will be assessed on all learning outcomes during the seminar and laboratory sessions. Discussion with the tutors and reflection on your performance will allow you to continuously monitor your performance and feed this forward for improvement.

Module abstract

This module aims to provide students with knowledge of and skills in technologies for the utilisation of renewable and sustainable energy sources for heat and power production using heat engines and other types of converters. The student will critically analyse different types of renewable and sustainable energy sources and the engineering methods employed to utilise them for heat and power production. Various forms of energy sources such as solar, biomass, hydrogen, nuclear, geo-thermal and thermal waste will be covered.
