What will I learn on this module?
You will learn to develop the ability to apply appropriate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to the solution of a wide range of problems involving fluid flow and heat transfer. Through the use of application examples within industry-standard software you will become familiar with effective approaches to CFD modelling and to interpret the results gained in light of the underlying equations of viscous flow, heat transfer and other physical models such as turbulence models.
How will I learn on this module?
You will learn through engagement with lectures, seminar and workshop sessions. We will make use of case studies moving from simple ones at the start and increasing in complexity as the module develops. Industry-standard CFD software will be introduced through the seminar sessions and through directed study tasks related to engineering applications. The lectures will be used to transfer knowledge and direct your further work while the seminars and workshops will offer you the opportunity to discuss your work, to practice with the software and to solve problems while receiving direct guidance form the tutors to allow you to reflect on your learning so that you can feed this forward to the assessments. Independent learning will be an important part of the module and will assist you in developing your skills as an engineering practitioner by using what you learn in the module to set up your own direction as you seek additional support for the learning.
How will I be supported academically on this module?
In addition to direct contact with the module team during lectures, seminars and laboratories you are encouraged to develop your curiosity by making direct contact with the module team either via email or the open door approach we operate throughout the programme. You will be regularly referred to supporting resources including relevant texts, software downloads and relevant multimedia materials. References to these resources will be made available through the e-learning portal and in lectures and seminars.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
MLO1 Critically review the governing equations and mathematical principles of fluid dynamics and heat transfer employed in CFD software.
MLO2 Evaluate physical models and their application in CFD software
Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:
MLO3 Analyse complex engineering flows systematically using CFD software and make judgements based on available data.
MLO4 Independently plan a CFD project to solve unknown problems involving thermofluids, considering time and computer resource constraints and demonstrating an awareness of the limitations of CFD methodologies
Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):
MLO5 Demonstrate a critical awareness of the current and emerging numerical methods in the field of fluid dynamics and heat transfer.

Module abstract
This module explores computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods and their application and future trends concerning thermofluid systems. The topics covered will include the numerical techniques applied, for example, to heat transfer and fluid flow problems, conjugate heat transfer problems, fin analysis, cavitation and turbulence. The module is intended to relate and develop the your knowledge and understanding of fundamental engineering principles and theory to the field of CFD and numerical heat transfer. You will be introduced to advanced research methods for the CFD modelling of engineering systems and then apply those methods to evaluate the performance and efficiency of a representative system through the use of industry-standard software. By combining the lectures and tutorial sessions in practical thermofluid systems development, you will have a chance to extend your knowledge and potential employment perspectives.

Full time Courses starting in 2023 are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but may include elements of online learning.
