This fascinating masters offers an insight into how microbes work and are at the forefront of new research,  from diseases, to medicine and technology.

This hands-on course will give you the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the exploration of Microbiology and become an expert of the craft.

Northumbria is the only UK university to offer Microbiology as an individual discipline and allows you to gain a detailed knowledge of the subject across a range of fields, giving you the opportunity to specialise and look to break new ground as a young scientist.

The course will enable you to work alongside leading academics and local clinical practices and covers topics including clinical and environmental microbiology, enabling you to study diseases and how they work, as well as how we can utilise microbes in science to create new medicines.

It also offers the opportunity to look into microbial taxonomy, bioinformatics and molecular biology to utilise bacteria and microbes in the development of new technologies and substances through genome sequencing and biological data analysis.

You’ll enjoy working in our high-tech wet and dry labs which are fully equipped for molecular biology manipulations and you will be encouraged to work on your own research projects and develop publications and articles to progress into a career or PhD study.


FacilitiesWhen you want to get hands-on experience within applied science laboratories we can support you. We teach in large modern, well- equipped labs with audio-visual facilities to enhance our ability to demonstrate techniques or interesting observations.
